  • GET OVER GRUDEN! He's not coming. I am beginning to think Butch Davis would be as good if not better than Gruden. He has the expereince in College and can recruit. He can tell recruits the same thing Gruden can that he can get them to the NFL.

  • What surprises me is that Hart didn't know Fisher would turn us down. Who in their right mind thought he'd leave a plum job at FSU for a rebuilding project at Tennessee?!!? With that said, bring us Strong!!!!

. . . and a raw deal in getting caught cheating at Miami before UNC, and in getting fired after failing miserably with the Browns?

His ethics, or lack thereof, are still a huge deal to a program on NCAA probation. It's incredibly stupid for a program on the NCAA's poopy list to hire a coach who is also on the poopy list (and I assure you, he's on their "watch" list after Miami).

None of the above changes with regard to whether they couldn't come up with enough evidence to hang him at UNC, and/or whether or not their administration gave him a raw deal.

Let a program with no NCAA issues take a run at him, but if we hire him and get in trouble, we'd be sanctioned back to the dark ages.

  • Saban denied he was leaving LSU for Alabama too, and look where he is now. Gruden's agent said that Tennessee had never contacted him which is total BS. I mean, do you really think Hart was just sitting on is butt since dooley was fired? Heck no, Gruden is still in the picture. Is it likely? No, but if there's not a press conference introducing a new coach this week, you know something is going on.

  • I don't really think any writers on this site know anything about the next coach at UT. After all the Gruden stuff turning out to be nothing, I don't believe anything about Strong, Gundy, Fischer etc., all conjecture. The next coach won't be any of them. I love Ut but I don't think many coaches want to play Alabama, Florida, Georgia every year then throw in a little Oregon it's a suicide move to coach here now. We are not going to get an established star, it is going to be an up and comer. I would go for James Franklin.

It's Gruden til there's a press conference from Hart introducing someone else. Smoke n mirrors from get go to protect Jon from espn contract wording that could jeapordize guaranteed money they owe him for rest of MNF season. Strong was interviewed to satisfy the non binding pledge by he AD's to interview a minority ( which if its not Gruden I would love Strong) .

I agree who heartily! I still say it's JG!

You'll need to cite your facts on Butch Davis re NCAA violations at Miami. After he was hired they got put on probation because of what His predecessor Dennis Ericson did. He took reduced scholarship sanctions and led them to great records. I'm not aware of anything that happened when he was at Miami they got him in trouble with the NCAA. It's stupid BS like this that keeps people from making a good hire

Not trying to burst your bubble but I have a cousin who works at ESPN and Gruden is waiting for the NY Giants to replace McCoughlin so he told most of the people at ESPN. He specifically said he loves Tennessee but he does not want to wipe college kids noses.

I whole heartily disagree with you about coaches not wanting to go up against Alabama, Florida and Georgia every year. The kind of coach we need, whether a young gun trying to make a name or an established coach, is one who has supreme confidence they can beat anybody. I don't like the way Kiffin handled things at Tennessee, but he had that swagger and bravado that said he would lead a team anywhere and expect to win.

There are a number of established coaches that might not want all of the challenges associated with the Tennessee program right now, but you can go back to when Saban took over Alabama and say some very similar things about a coach not wanting to take on LSU, Tennessee, Auburn ...every year.

If the next coach can convince Bray and either Patterson or Hunter to come back we should be OK on offense. And I don't see how we can be any worse on defense. If rumors about Oregon coach Chip Kelly's interest in the NFL are correct the Ducks might not be flying so high when we play them next year.

I still think we can get a name coach. At this point, with Fisher seemingly out of the picture, I think Charlie Strong would be a great fit. I also like Larry Fedora.

The nice thing is all of the speculation about the coach should be coming to an end this week or Dave Hart might be in real trouble.

If what I laughingly refer to as my "memory" is correct, isn't this the same Butch Davis that needed a missed pat, a rules changing bad call by the officials, and OT to beat Dooley in the "Music City Bowl" two years ago?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but It seems like the same guy to me.

Saban didn't leave LSU for Alabama he left for the NFL. Then left Miami for Alabama.
