Is sal the worst d coordinator of all time?

  • He should be fired right now. Horrible hire by Dooley.

First of all, you are just hearing what's said on tv, second of all if you noticed there were to people at the ball when it was caught, which means two people were there. Not to mention we have yet to have a game where we go without an alignment issue. If he is so bad why would Saban hire him, and why would he be an nfl coach. Funny thing we lost the same games with Wilcox as DC.

I will not get into who knows X's and O's better contest. I know this though he is being paid very well. He has not taught hi scheme to our players very well. You said it your self we haven't had a game with out an alignment issue. The same mistakes are being made. He's paid to correct them. He has had to reduce his defense to some degree. It hasnt worked. This is what Dave clawson had to do in his one year on offense. This is what happens when you don't do a good job installing your scheme. Remember as coaches they are being paid to determine the best course of action to install there brand of def/off and be effective. He has not done this, Dave clawson did not do it well either, he was let go. We expect better results. I'm with you on the he was a coach at Alabama, he can't suck at coaching. I believe rumors were that he would replace smart as DC. He was not as bans DC and never at the pro level either. All that's great but we continue to have the same problems. We don't tackle well , we don't set an edge well, we don't contain mobile QB s well at all (hell we made Glennon look like a dual threat), we don't cover, we make the same mental errors again and again ( coaches are paid to teach players to correct them). Jonathan Compton was the mountain moron under two different OCs, yet Kiffin came in and quickly made him effective and even got him drafted in the fifth round. Coaches are paid every day to take knives to gun fights and are expected to be effective and competitive. Our defense is not either for major portions of every game we have played against all levels of talent. He was paid to come here and do a job he is not doing a very good one at all. I don't think anywhere in his contract negotions was leading the league in big plays on third down anywhere acceptable. I liked the hire, I want both he and dooely to succeed. They are not, and the same things keep happening. We lose.

We didn't score enough points to win those games last year. This year, we've had plenty of offense, and NO D to speak of.

Couldn't agree more. Wilcox staying would have translated to at least one more win in these close games.

Someone please talk me out of it.

I don't know about 'of all time' but he is not looking to good. I just posted in another thread that you can only blame so much on the transition to the 3/4. Slow DB's, not setting the edge and so on but other teams have slower DB's, less talented DE's...but accomplish much more. It is possible that he has single handed cost Dooley his job. Just WOW!

He has not "single handily cost Dooley his job". Whose fault was it last year? Just another in the long line of excuses.

I think you mean Buddy Hackett, don't you?

Someone on another forum said Fred Flintstone, and that one made me literally lol.

The question, aside from the blame issue everyone else is discussing, is the question of whether or not our kids on average are really as dumb on defense as Sunseri obviously now believes they are. You can see it on his face, with mistake after mistake. "You just did what I've told you not to a thousand times--dumbarse! ARGGGH!"

Whoever our right end was on the Shaw run-in after a timeout during which the entire world knew Shaw would, if not run, at least roll out on a run throw option, still crashed down and failed to set the edge. He had the biggest Homer Simpson look after the play was over, as if, "D'oh! They TOLD me he'd do that if I crashed down and failed to set the edge (again). Stupid me!" [beats helmet]

Sunseri has coached other places in college, too, and seems stunned that the other kids he coached can grasp concepts our kids at UT can't.

Is he nuts? If so, why? Is he correct? If so, how can that be?

If you blame it on the "explainer," then how can someone who has no problems communicating at other stops, including Bama, not be able to communicate at our place? If he is a horrible teacher of fundamentals and concepts, how was he a prized Saban assistant, especially with Saban a defensive minded coach?

And there's this: Clawson, after he was fired and spent a year as HC of BGSU, was quoted as saying to some media-types in that area that he still doesn't know why college kids he coached before and after UT had no problem understanding his offense, but UT's kids were just completely, totally lost.

On defense, however, I still think lack of depth is our biggest problem, and sometimes it's lack of brain depth. I remember Sun. saying before the season that if Randolph, Lathers or Randolph got hurt this year, it could hurt us dearly, because they were the only ones he thought really understood the defense. Lathers is maybe 90%; Maggitt is maybe 65% at best; and Randolph's out for the year. Think of this: at Bama, he could made All-American #1 run stairs at 5 a.m. 'til he puked, and if he still didn't, ahem, "grasp" a difficult concept, he'd be replaced by a 5 star sophomore and put on the bench. This defense has looked to me most of the year (really, since game 2) that we had few to no athletic smart guys, and the choice was between good athletes who were not the brightest, and smart guys who run a 4.7 in the secondary. So, do I want to get out-athleted or outsmarted?

    Thoughts?

Vince Lombardi and Bear Bryant team coaching could not have won with the team Dooley had last year. That's not an excuse; it's an undeniable fact. Especially after Hunter and Bray went down.

Nice, well thought out post! I am kind of sick of all of the blame being pointed at the coaches. Gee, I may have only played thru high school ball but its not that dang difficult to do what the coaches tell you to do unless you are stupid or completely undisciplined, which is maybe where we are. Either too dumb or completely undisciplined.
