Is the MSU game "Do or Die" for Dooley?

  • If we win, odds are we'll finish with a 8-4 record. If we lose, odds are we'll finish 7-5. I think 8-4 is definitely good enough to retain Dooley. I think 6-6 definitely means he's gone. I think an argument could be made either way if we finish 7-5 so I'm curious to know how the board feels about the importance of this weekend's game.

  • I hope not. I still remember the South Carolina game in Fulmer's last year, and that awful feeling as they were piling it on. Everybody knew by the third quarter that Fulmer was gone. It was simply one of the worst three day sequences in my Tennessee football fan life.

  • I doubt it. I think he's back with 7-5, but i do think it will take a lot of heat off of him and will help the program move forward a lot sooner. 8-4 or better will help recruiting and probably save us a year or two on the rebuild project.

Not a rant directed at OP, but it's getting really tiresome to read the same question each week regarding Dooley. Everyone this side of the equator knows Dooley's seat is hot. It won't get any hotter or cooler with one single win over a traditional doormat of the SECW. His season will be judged as a whole and this game will be one part of it.

MSU might be a door mat "traditionally", but that is no longer so. Mullen has that team playing good football, and that tradition might be changing very soon.

You can say it's one game all you want but we aren't getting to 8 wins without being MSU, so I disagree. I think his seat will without a doubt get hotter or colder based on the results of this game. If we win, people will tend to relax because we are most likely 8-4 at worst. If we lose, people will be on edge because we are most likely 7-5 at best. If you feel more comfortable looking at the season as a whole that's fine but the question remains the same. Would 7-5 be good enough to retain Dooley? I don't care if it's been asked a lot. We are entering the most pivotal game of the remainder of the season. We aren't beating Alabama and we aren't beating South Carolina. This is Tennessee's last realistic chance to win a game that will get them to 8 wins. Opinions change all the time, so I would like to see the boards current opinion on whether or not 7-5 is good enough.

I think 7-5 is enough, but not comfortably. If we go on and win a bowl game, I think that will compensate for the regular season record. But if we lose the bowl game, oh man. This off-season will be horrendous.
Also, I'm not ready to sit here and say we can't pull an upset against USCe. Their schedule is brutal before we go marching into Columbia. Anything can happen that night.
Regardless, 7-5 is not exactly what I would call a good season, but definitely an improvement. I think with 7-5, Dooley stays. Reason for saying that, we have shown improvement and if we keep showing improvement the remainder of the season, considering who we have played, I think its enough. But the bowl game will be the real barometer, if we go 7-5.

the game is important but more important will be attendance at Bama and in November. jmo

  • LWS, what's your take on the idea that we just do not have the money to bring in an elite coach right now?

Just to be clear, I love Dooley and I want him to stay. Just wondering what your take is on the financial situation.

I agree we don't have the money but also, our history does promote bringing in an elite coach unless he has Tennessee DNA. I don't see that changing. jmo

Well, I'm not Hart or LWS, to whom you directed the question, but I have to think that in the current financial climate, you'd have to find one or several big $$$ donors to basically pay the coach's salary for at least the first couple of years, along w/paying buyouts to CDD and Sun.

Some big name might agree to a deferred "signing bonus" in year two--I'd offer it if I were the AD and in that situation--or not. Worth a shot. JMO, but I still think even if we tank it this year, it would be better long term to make the move after '13, when you have more $$$ to work with.

But as you said, you're rooting for Dooley to succeed (and I am too, FWIW), so I do think it's fair to ask why so many people (again, it isn't just you, by any means) are so preoccupied with a question that will have to play itself out, as the team does. If the guys on the team are thinking about what happens if we fail, they've already failed.

I'm just gonna wait and see. coffee
