Is the MSU game "Do or Die" for Dooley?

  • Its not do or die because they still have games to play. But of the "Big 4" games, this should be the best shot at a win. And I still believe he has to win one of those games to stay. Sure, they could lose in Starkville and come back and beat Bama and SC and sweep November and Doolander could get an extension. But if they lose Saturday, its hard to imagine that happening. That, and Neyland will be covered up in red for Bama if they lose this weekend.

Well, I'm not Hart or LWS, to whom you directed the question, but I have to think that in the current financial climate, you'd have to find one or several big $$$ donors to basically pay the coach's salary for at least the first couple of years, along w/paying buyouts to CDD and Sun.

Some big name might agree to a deferred "signing bonus" in year two--I'd offer it if I were the AD and in that situation--or not. Worth a shot. JMO, but I still think even if we tank it this year, it would be better long term to make the move after '13, when you have more $$$ to work with.

But as you said, you're rooting for Dooley to succeed (and I am too, FWIW), so I do think it's fair to ask why so many people (again, it isn't just you, by any means) are so preoccupied with a question that will have to play itself out, as the team does. If the guys on the team are thinking about what happens if we fail, they've already failed.

I'm just gonna wait and see.

I agree with everything you said..

I've said forever that hot seat talk does nothing but weaken the program. Recruits read these boards and when they see the team's most rabid fans speculating DAILY on whether the head coach has a future, it doesn't inspire them to want to play for Tennessee.

We need great players and great players want to play for a stable program and a coach who is going to be around long into the future. All this idle speculation serves our rivals more than it serves Tennessee.

Personally, I'm preoccupied with it simply because I have a tendency to over-analyze things, sometimes to the point of worrying about it. Not a healthy habit, I know, but it is what it is and it's something I'm learning to get better at.

The Dooley situation is something that I'm concerned about because I think it would be a mistake to let him go unless we finish 6-6 or worse, so I'm a little uneasy about the game this weekend and the impact it could have on the program. Its crazy to think about how close we are to competing for championships but also how close Dooley is to losing the fanbase, but that's just the nature of coaching in the SEC.

  • Makes a difference when you are trying to win the East and then the SEC. You need depth and lots of it in the SEC or anywhere. Just think Dooley needs one or two more years. Johnny Majors started out with bad records then got his flow. Dooley had coaching change overs and player change over as well as new AD. No one is holding anybody up for a cheeseburger, thats gotta be good.

As crazy as that list is, the one thing I don't see? Any linebacking talent at all. Lots of DBs, at least one DT that hurt (Hughes) and lots of skill positions.

Oh...and the big thing? I see that list and see a LOT of team speed that is now missing.
