It comes down to two choices for me: Gruden or Strong

  • Gruden is at the top of my list, but if he turns it down I think we'll regret it if we don't make Charlie Strong our next coach. I think anyone who is judging his recruiting by the players he's getting at Louisville is mistaken. He's proven he's been able to recruit in the SEC when he was a coordinator. He has the ties, he has built the defenses, he is probably more likely to hire/retain some offensive assistants that we want here (Jay Graham, Pittman, Tee etc.) and more than anything else.........the guy is a winner!

  • Also, someone mentioned the other day that Strong has 30 players from Florida on his team right now. If he can get players from Florida to come and play at Louisville, I'm sure he could get some high profile Florida kids to come and play at Tennessee.

Agree. Gruden first offer and if no we need Charlie Strong. Not only can he recruit he has a great amount of experience in the SEC. The next coach walks into a much better situation than when Coach Dooley arrived. I believe the announcement will come sometime around the SEC Championship weekend.

What if it's neither? Would you be happy with Fisher? He wins, he recruits and knows how to coach.

Honestly, I think Strong is a better choice. I would be ok with Fisher if Strong turns us down, but I'd be more confident in Steong turning this thing around quicker and maintaining it formthe long run. I also like the idea of him being a defensive minded SEC guy.

Im with you, but my list is a 2x2 list. The first two are long shots but need to at least take a shot, the other two are the backup plans, but I feel damn good backup plans.

    Gruden; Stoops x Fisher;Strong

I still feel that Strong is going to be a huge winner in the SEC, the difference is, will it be here or somewhere else.

  • The more I've thought about it today (maybe between the turkey, a couple of toddy's and Dallas getting thrashed again) I have changed my mind on Gruden. I think he is going to have his pick if he wants it of a NFL job. Dallas, Philly and the Jets are at least 3 high profile jobs where he'll be considered. Given the restrictions of coaching in the NCAA and the immaturities in dealing with 18-20 year old kids I think the pro game is a better fit.

Trust me, I would love nothing more than to have Gruden as our next head coach but at the end of the day his heart is in the NFL or the Monday night booth.

So, now I'm beginning to slowly take air out of my Gruden balloon so that when we learn he isn't going to be our head coach I don't fly off the handle like I feel many on this board will do. Instead I've set my sights on Realistic hires for our program at this point. That's why my vote is for Jimbo Fisher or Charlie Strong. I am confident that both will be able to bring us back to prominence and relevance not only on the SEC but also nationally. I hope many on this board will do the same.

  • After reading all this for the last week, or so. Some things just don't fit.....why would Jimbo Fisher leave Fla State, regardless of the ACC, he has been there since 2007, HC since 2010 with a 29-9 record, for a rebuilding job at UT. Same with Bob Stoops, one of the most successful coaches at Oklahoma. I just don't get it, don't get me wrong, they are, obviously, quality coaches any school would be glad to have. But why would they leave what they got to come here...just to be in the SEC? That's why for me it's either Gruden or Strong. Gruden has his choice of NFL teams which (maybe) we can't compete with. If not, then Strong. His 20 years with ties to top programs in the SEC and connections with recruits in Florida can't be beat. IMO Fedora will be a really good coach, NC is fortunate to have him. But he is not the splash hire we need right now.
    1. GRUDEN 2. STRONG, after that don't know, just NO PETRINO
