It's Time...

  • We have to beat a ranked team this year to continue the upward trend in the program and this Saturday night appears to be our best chance to do so. I am so ready for this team to take the next step and beat a ranked opponent and win a road game against a team not named Vandy. I will be in Starkville on Saturday night giving my all for the team and hopefully we come home with a victory. The team needs this win, Dooley needs this win, the football program needs this win, our recruiting needs this win, and our fan base needs this win. The team needs to handle their business on Saturday night and get over the hump. Man, this game is huge for us and it is going to be a long week until kickoff!

I think the line is something like -1.5 for MSU. Playing at home gives us a narrow edge. Here are some facts you should consider:

    1. Our first team defense still hasn't been touched for a touchdown. The long pass by Kentucky had a second team CB falling, leaving the WR wide open. I doubt it happens again anytime soon.

    2. It will be strength against strength. You have a great offense, we have a great defense. You have great receivers, we have great CB's.

    3. Our offense has gotten off to big leads in every game. We get conservative and burn clock after getting 3 scores ahead. I doubt we do that with you, because you have such quick strike capability.

    4. Some teams respond well after a bye week. It is harder going on the road.

I don't think this will be a real high scoring game. I figure >30 will win it.

  • Well with the news of 3 games still yet to be determined a gametime for next week, this weeks game will decide Dooleys fate. If we lose this week, we are going to be playing a noon game against Bama. That is awful for ticket sales. We have to win this week. If we do we will be ranked, and so will Bama and it will be a 7PM ESPN game. We need that badly.

  • I think we're going to lose. I'm not trying to be negative, it's just how I feel. I think it's a great matchup for MSU on both sides of the ball plus they have home field advantage.

Some of our "insiders" say we have been "playing possum." We have dominated every team in the first half. We had a 60:40 passing to run ratio in the first half against UK. We had a 60:40 run to pass ratio in the second. We were just running the clock after scoring first in the 2nd half.

Playing possum? I highly doubt it but that doesn't mean I think UT will win. Just because you try to run the ball doesn't mean you're playing possum.. it means you're being smart with a lead.. and the results from that strategy don't indicate that you were playing possum, it indicates that you can't generate points without relying heavily your passing game.

Yeah I dont really think 'playing possum' is a good way to put it. I think you guys do what teams should do in the first half and then pull your foot off the gas in the second because you can. I think this game is going to be a good game personally. With the game being in mississippi I have to give the edge to the bulldogs but not much of an edge. I really think the teams match up pretty well. Tennessee has a great passing attack and the running game has really started to pick up the pace. But we have problems on defense. More specifically the end around runs. We havent given up to many 'big' pass plays or runs up the middle, its those stupid runs to the outside. I really think this will be a high scoring game...first team to 40 wins or last team with the ball wins.

I mostly agree. But I'm hoping with two weeks to prepare Sal has made some adjustments and hopefully our contain will be improved. Maybe by giving Willie Bo some more playing time. After he came in against UGA our contain improved dramatically. Watching Curt dive inside on every outside run really hurt me. Maybe MSU tries running outside for the first couple of drives, and maybe we get some stops for once, which may give us a chance to jump into the lead early. Hopefully, of course.

  • I think the biggest thing here is that noone knows for sure how good Mississippi State really is. I think saying they have a "great" defense is questionable at this point, since they haven't played anybody. Their 2 SEC wins are against teams that have struggled mightily on offense this year. They definitely gave up some points to Troy. That doesn't mean that they aren't a great defense.. They just haven't been tested yet. I do believe that our offense has several offensive weapons, something they haven't faced yet. Now, our defense is another story. will they play like they did against NC State, and against FL for the 1st half and 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter, or will they play like they did in the last qtr. of the FL game and in the 1st and 3rd qtrs. at GA. Will be interesting to see who shows up. Tyler's mentality is critical too. If he plays like we know he can, watch out. If he plays like he did in the 4th qtr. of FL or GA, then we're screwed.

    JennyVolfan

  • I think we put up points, it's just a matter of whether or not our defense continues to bleed like a hemofeliac in a knife factoryshrug

    hounddog

  • A few things about Mississippi State. Their two biggest wins are versus Kentucky and Auburn. Kentucky is awful and Auburn lost to Arkansas. Now....that's still two more SEC teams than we have beaten this year. Our biggest wins are NC State and.....well....thats really our only "big" win. I think we are better than people give us credit for, and it seems to me that Miss State is a little overrated. It will be a good game. I personally believe we are pretty evenly balanced with each other. 34-27 Tennessee.

  • Hopefully for Dooley, the programs, the fans, and for Tyler Bray this is his next step forward. Florida-3 quarters of Bray football. Georgia-fought back from a hole a played 3 1/2 quarters of Bray football. MSU-4 quarters of Bray football and his first top 25 win
