It's doesn't really matter what we want

  • I love our uniforms. love em. i love tradition. Also though i have enough logic to know this is much more the players team than it is my team or than it is your team. if it gives our players a boost to be given something new and different to wear then so be it. again it's their team. not to mention recruits eat that stuff up. people can try to deny that all the want but it's fact! Oregon was middle of the road and started the uniform thing. Soon after they became a powerhouse. Fact is kids care about silly things when picking a school. You think it was a coincidence Todd Campbell had number 11 taken from him? No it was not. When the top back in nation wants a certain number He gets it. If the top recruits want alternate uniforms for big games you give it to them. nobody has more tradition than Bama and they even have done it. If you are one of those people who piss and moan about uniforms then you don't have the best interest of the program in mind. We need to do what ever it takes to get back. everyone should be on board. sorry for the rant but the helmet thread got me going. and i realize it's long so sorry.

I'm not interested in getting into yet another uniform debate, but here goes. We are the University of Tennessee. I won't bore you with the history of our fine football program, but you can look it up. We play in the greatest stadium in the country. We have some of the finest facilities in the country. We have the one of the finest, most loyal fanbases in teh country. We put a TON of players into the NFL. We are snuggled into the base of the Great Smoky Mountains, one of the most beautiful areas of the country.

Our school colors are Orange and White (and girly blue).

I, personally, want players that want to come here for the reasons I stated above. If a player wants to come to UT because we wore black jerseys for a game or two I really don't want him. He's not coming for the right reasons. I want kids who want to play for everything Tennessee has been and currently is. We are Tennessee. We aren't Oregon or Maryland or any other johnny-come-lately football program that needs to sell kids on their program by wearing flashy jerseys.

You don't see Alabama, LSU, Michigan, USC, Penn State, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma,Florida, Miami, FSU or any other traditional football powerhouse (UT included) adding new colors into their uniforms to try to pander to recruits.

I am proud of our football program, its history. If you want us to wear black or red or yellow or pink, that's fine. Just don't tell me that I should be on board because it'll help our recruiting because I don't buy it - not at Tennessee. /endrant

  • Don't break the tradition, that is one of the things that sold me on the Vols when I first went to Tennessee, all the orange on Friday at work.

A VFL makes orange and white important. I can see a certain game each year or two to change but not a normal situation.
Could you see Dooley in Black?no

  • UT originally wore black jerseys, so it's not a complete break from tradition to wear them on occasion. But given Dooley's attention to detail, if UT were to wear black jerseys again, they wouldn't be like the ones worn against USCe in 2009. Those were done at the last minute, which is why there were no names on the backs.

I will point out, as I did in another thread, that black is an official school color:

    http://communications.utk.edu/branding/palette.php

    Girly blue is not. nono

And if you talk about history, from 1911 to 1921 black was our primary jersey color.

We first wore orange in 1927.

If you want to make a statement that you prefer orange because it is our primary color or because it is bold or because you hate black, that is fine. But if you want to talk about history and tradition, black is part of it. It isn't just a gimmick. It is a part of our history.

I love our uniforms. I wear my orange PROUDLY. But I also love throwing back to our history and tradition and if it fires up our players and excites recruits, even better.

That being said, we aren't wearing black Saturday.
