Jalen Tabor & Todd Kelly Talk Gruden

  • Dave Hooker of ESPN.com's RecrutingNation wrote an interesting article on what several top class of 2014 Safeties think about the potential of Jon Gruden coming to Rocky Top. Take it FWIW...

    Jalen Tabor: "'That would be great,' safety Jalen Tabor from Washington (D.C.) Friendship said when asked of the possibility that Gruden could be hired to replace third-year coach Derek Dooley. 'It would be a bonus.' When asked how much a Gruden hiring might help recruiting, Tabor said 'A lot.'"

    Todd Kelly, Jr.: "'Word is that he is the man to hire but that would be the fourth coach at UT I think in the last five years,' Kelly Jr. said.When asked specifically about Gruden, Kelly Jr. said, 'I really don't know how much about what he would bring to the university. If it did happen, though, then I think people would be fired up about the program again like any school would be with the hiring of a new coach.'"

  • I can't recall a situation where reporters were asking 17 year old kids about replacing a coach that hasn't been fired yet. It just seems wrong imo, but that's just my two cents.

    From what Ive been told the only thing that hasnt happened is making it public.

  • Interesting how Tabor said that hiring Gruden would help "a lot"... Pretty much means elite high school prospects aren't sold on playing for Dooley quite yet.

  • It's an absurd question. You are either asking a high school kid to give a coach a vote of confidence (and the question doesn't seem to be framed where that was much of an option...how great would it be to play for Jon Gruden? or would you like to play for Gruden if he takes over at UT?) or to say something negative about a coach he may play for and has a super bowl ring.

    And yes, in a year where we have just lost 5 in a row, we are not signing a top HS prospect (include JUCO's and it changes).but I think 4 of the top 10 made it to campus, so it is not like there was never interest.

    I never said he was coming. I meant Dooley is done, that just hasn't been made public.

  • I don't see any value in leaking that information to anyone around the program. The team hasn't quit on him yet, so why give them a reason to? I just don't see how leaking that information at this point serves the program at all.

    They haven't quite on each other. Derek Dooley will not be back next year.

  • Honestly not trying to be contintious, and I am sure you have reasons to trust your sources. I can just not think of any value for the program or this team of letting that information out now. Who benefits from that information leaking? Doesn't help the recruiting class, the current team, player development, or ticket sales, so I just don't see why even if a decision had been made by Hart he would share that with anyone.

    I agree only reason I may believe darthvaul is the tone of Dooley after the loss this previous week. It was different then every other loss and he sounded defeated. But again I'm just speculating.
