From the UT Sports bio on Jancek:

"Worked as the Bearcats sole defensive coordinator in 2012 after serving as UC's co-defensive coordinator in 2010 and 2011
Also served as Bearcats recruiting coordinator for two seasons, signing the BIG EAST's top recruiting class according the Sporting News in 2011
Coached UC's defense to a Top 20 ranking in scoring defense in 2011 and 2012
Guided UC to the nation's leading defense in terms of tackles for loss (8.62 per game) and second in sacks (3.46) in 2011"

Keep in mind those 2011 numbers included the Tennessee game, so they'd probably be markedly higher if you excluded those stats...

SEC is a big leap from Big East. Not saying he won't get it done.

I love hearing all of these good things from the new staff, but I'm ready to see the product on the field already. Is it spring practice yet? Better yet, how scared is Austin Peay at this point? August 31st can't get here soon enough.

Spring practice is closer than you think!

  • You know traditions can be born and they can die. Why the worry about being blown out by 20 in the fourth quarter? Half of Neyland Stadium will be leaving anyway. No one says you have to do it. All he's doing is asking.

All this talk about tradition. All these traditions didn't just start when the football program started. Rocky Top came in the 70s I believe and didn't Fulmer start the Vol walk?

If he wins it will possibly become a tradition. And I'll have no problems putting my fist in the air to a chomping Gator.

If he loses? It'll go the way of the Dodo bird and orange pants.

  • I hear what some are saying about the new defensive "customs," and my first inclination was to agree that the 4th down sign, etc., should not be done. UT has a long, great history in football. They never did that kind of thing before. They did not need to do those things under Majors or Fulmer and won a whole lot of games.

But then I got to thinking that, the truth is: It has been 15 years since Fulmer's NC and 5 years (?) since we were in a Big time bowl. Most of today's recruits (outside of TN), may not remember UT's real glory days. Fulmer is gone. Johnny is not coming back either. We have had three coaches in five years. And the good ole southern boy thing just failed. The point being, we may never win the way we did under Fulmer. That time is gone. Doesn't mean we won't win again, But if UT is going to win anytime soon, it is going to be done Butch's way. There is no old-time UT football hero coming to the rescue. Even Cutcliffe turned down the job (twice).

So, despite my first reaction, if Butch thinks that stuff like this is going to help UT win, or instill discipline in the troops, or help in any way, I don't mind. If he thinks that has worked in the past for him, so be it. If Butch doesn't win, we're probably looking at another 5 years or so (after he is fired), at least, until the program gets anywhere near competitive in the SEC East (if it does at all).

I also don't think you are going to see that many 20 point blowout losses under CBJ. I strongly suspect that he is ten times the game day coach that the last one (not talking about DD any more - refuse to mention his name) was. I don't care if we win a little differently than we did under Phil. We really don't have a choice anyway IMO. I just want to win again. I suspect I am not the only one who feels that way.

  • I know one other school that does a similar thing on the sidelines with hand motions, and we share the state with them. I think it engages the kids and makes them more competitive so they can rub it in the opposing teams face that they have been working hard all year to prepare this defense and we just showed what we are capable of and we'll do it all game long.

The Vandy UT game next year is going to be one big sign language convention.

Yea.... Their overall defensive rankings weren't that great. You better check yourself before you wreck yourself

Their defensive rankings were a helluva lot better than ours.

So were 116 other FBS schools, pretty weak argument.
