Jancek's plan: Conquer 'challenges'

John Jancek plans to rebuild Tennessee's defense, but the new coordinator doesn't deny the tough task ahead. “I mean, let’s be realistic. We’ve got some challenges,” he said.

  • With the emphasis on speed over size (which I wholeheartedly embrace after watching people blow by our guys last year), will the new strength and conditioning coach value speed over bulk? More running, quickness drills, things of that nature?

  • Great article wes. With McCullers being the exception, isn't the rest of our DL (and defense for that matter) decently situated for a shift back to a 4-3 when you talk about potentially moving some OLBs to DE (i.e Smith). Outside of that, i would think that this team wouldn't be too bad off personnel wise switching back to the 4-3. Maybe it's because it is 2am here, but I can't really think of any guys who stick out as "3-4" guys aside from Big Mac

  • Since we pretty much ran a 4-3 the second half of the season- I don't see that transition being a problem. McCullars is good enough to play a 1-6 if needed. I think Miggitt will excel off the edge with his hand on the ground.

Pretty cool picture at the top of the story there by the KNS's Adam Brimer.

Those guys do awesome work bringing awesome photos to govols247, and I rarely remember to mention that enough.

Is that photoshopped or did the cameraguy have a light on the coach's face in a sorta dark room?

If you look at the video camera you will see the light on top of it that was shining into the coaches face. That was what framed him and created the good still photo.

  • I totally support the new coaching staff, and am excited about the early returns, but I find it odd that he (and other coaches mentioned the same thing in different articles) says he hasn't spent any time meeting the current players or watching film. I know that recruiting was critical at the time of their arrival, but how do you know where to focus if you don't know what you have. Unfortunately, wen you start a new job, your first few weeks are spent working round the clock, and there is much to cover. Nonetheless, both learning who and what you have is an important aspect of effective recruiting.

I just want good coaches. Man, I hope he's a good coach.

From everything I've read, I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about the recruiting class being ranked very high. Hope it improves by signing day. I think it's safe to say there is work to do there. What we really need is coaches who can take good players and make them great. I hope this is the staff to do that. Recruiting will take care of itself after a couple years of great coaching.
