Offensive tackle Andrew Jelks of Henry County High School in Paris, Tenn., announced Saturday that he has committed to Vanderbilt, choosing the Commodores over Tennessee.

  • We needed another tackle, but its not a huge loss. Id rather have Sentimore, Autry, Elston, Merideth, and Patterson more than Jelks anyway.

  • Who are the top rated recruits that we are most likely to sign?

  • Look if the young man wants to go to Vandy, good for him. I wish him well and hope for the best for him and his decision.

We have other needs to fill at this time and loosing one OL this year did not seem like a great priority imo.

I think he will be an exceptional player, wanted him to be a Vol but it is not the end by a long shot.

Hubbs said he thinks Meredith is favoring the vols now, Patterson and Autry are still supposively favoring us,

I think its a toss up for Elston and Sentimore

We may be able to pull Diggs, but you can tell in the articles that he loves Nebraska.

I agree. I'm not losing sleep over this guy. Hope he likes showing his gold and losing to the Vols.

  • I know a lot of folks will say we Vol fans are hating on Jelks but i truly said long ago to leave this kid alone. There are better players to use the pick on. I believe in the VFL program and if a kid is not showing VFL signs then move on. College football is so much about emotion and the Vols need that when the chips are down. Bring on VFLifers. Jelks will get a good education.

    IT AINT ILLEGAL!!??!!??

if that is what you are after then God speed but if you are looking to be coached up and play at the next level then have to believe that there are better options out there

  • It does concern me a life long Tennessee fan would go to Vandy when we are recruiting as hard as we did, they can out recruit us in our own back yard, things have changed

    hopey

  • There will always be kids that choose other schools without any logical reason. I just doubt this is an "out-recruit" issue. Kids that make decisions like this always have some unique reason that we don't get. Vandy's a great school. Closer to his home and family.

Bottom line on Franklin as a coach is that if he wins and recruits well at all at Vandy in the first 2-3 years he'll be gone and Vandy will still be Vandy or he'll stay and Vandy will still be Vandy.

The institutional issues that exist there that limit football success aren't going to go away if he wins 6 games for a couple of years. For proof see "Wildcats, Kentucky". Unless the Vandy version of Phil Knight or T. Boone Pickens appears this is a program destined for mediocrity.

We didn't really need an OL. This is not a reason to go into meltdown mode. Great class in the pipeline.

"Count it down with me. Five, four, three, two, one. The national champion is clad in Big Orange!"

  • Yes you are right it's just that option is not Vanderbilt.

Maybe he is just the kind of guy that always pulls for the underdog!

    bloodrunorange

  • Maybe he is the kind of kid that walked into the lockerroom and say James and Richardson and decided he did not want to RS and then sit out for another year while Tenn signs a couple other studs at Tackle and he never hits the field for us. Look the coach at Vandy can recruit. Jelks always watched Tenn growing up. Lifelong fan. That is great and all... But When you are choosing a college to go to, there is more to it than that. And I'd say "fans" think that is a much bigger part of it than it is to the actual recruit. I think it is funny that if we get 4 of the top 6 guys on our board that all have us in their top 2 or 3 and at least 3 of them have us number 1 right now, we will have a top 7 or 8 recruiting class in the nation... and yet there will be people on here crying that we lost the 3 star, #6 player in a weak state to vandy who is about 50 pounds too light right now to play in the SEC while we already have 2 soph or younger Tackles that weigh over 320 already.

  • Most of us who visit this board can't imagine a kid, especially a Tennessee kid, turning down an offer to play for the Vols. We're fans and that's the way it is. Kids don't always do what we want.

As kyvolunteer said, we've got "a great class in the pipeline". We'll be fine. Hope he has a great career at Vandy and a great life afterward. Also hope he goes 0-4 vs the Vols.

+1. Vandy should NEVER beat us out for a recruit we want. Things have indeed changed.

  • Wiz kid nailed it

  • Thank God it's over...he knew he couldn't walk in here and start plus he won't be playing on Sundays anyway. He made the best decision for his future...getting the crap beat out of him every Saturday. We will overcome and even though it doesn't seem like it will be better next year. When we hang 40 plus on him next year and gets knocked around by our juniors don't go cry like a baby to daddy because daddy gonna say I told you so.
