Jim Chaney

  • So, I'm fairly new to this site (Grumors got me on here), and I have no idea what y'alls opinions are on Jim Chaney. Do ya love him, or hate him, and why? It seems to me that if we land Strong, we will keep Chaney.

    Good or bad thing?

  • St Louis Post dispatch has him as top contact for OC for MU with the early departure of their OC today/last night.

I like CJC but seems like many have mixed feelings on him and his play calling. I would support him staying imo

  • He was "ok" for me but, I don't know who else you bring in if you get rid of him. The offense was obviously pretty good this year, but I'm not sure who was making some of the play calls when we looked really out of place. That could have been Bray, Chaney or Dooley so who knows. I could never figure out why we didn't score more points when we had the oppurtunities.

Of course I guess my expecations may be a little high we were one of the best offenses in the country and I'm saying it was just "ok" HA!

  • Love the guy. Affable, low ego guy that produced a historically great offense for us. Love him.

  • I like him. I know sometimes we questioned his commitment to the run, but honestly I think we got much better at that after the Florida game. I really don't understand how people hate on a guy that led us to the 2nd best offense in school history.

If we get Strong, I would LOVE to see Chaney stay. Defensive head coach with a veteran, proven OC. Not to mention, providing continuity for our best unit on the field. And from what I hear, louisville's OC doesn't sound like someone we necessarily want to bring over, so unless we can pull someone great from another school, I'm all good for keeping Chaney.

  • can you imagine Chaney with a good defense...

  • I would not mind a bit if he stayed. If he could work with Kiffin and Dooley, then why not Strong?

I really liked the guy and would be happy if Chaney stayed in place as OC. I would really like to see what he could do with a talented QB that he actually trusted.

    And welcome to the board.

  • Would be a smart move for strong to secure Chaney, Graham, Pittman + Tee. Let them build on offensive success and let Charlie load up on the D.....

Pardon me while I drool over that thought. +1

  • Chaney's offense puts a lot of strain on a defense. Think Strong would want that?

First off, thanks! Glad to be here. Love this site, the people, and the staff.

Second, anyone with ideas on who a good replacement would be if he didn't stay? I mean, for heaven's sake, he is good at what he does. As mentioned above, who is to stop him from taking a job elsewhere (maybe even a low-key head coach job?) Who knows.

I love the guy. Not too high on my list after the Florida game, but he really turned things around. After all, we could have been an 11-1 football team all by his doing had our defense been moderately decent.

I agree with this. However, at the same time, keeping Chaney might be the safest approach. I'm guessing it will either be Watson, who he is likely comfortable with, or Chaney, who has shown he can be effective. A coach's fate can be determined by his coordinators and making one mistake even on one side of the ball can be costly as history has shown with Clawson and Sunseri. For that reason, I think Chaney stays. Also, I think personnel sometimes dictates what type of offense an OC runs, and we've always passed more under Chaney because that's what has worked. However, next year, if we lose our QB and top receivers, I can see Chaney getting a little bit more conservative behind his proven OL and backs.
