Jim Tressel - Hear Me Out

  • He was 94-22 at Ohio State and won a National Title. He also won 4 National Titles at Youngstown State. He has a murky history with the NCAA yes but according to reports his show cause penalty from the NCAA is not that much of a problem after the first few months he would be on the job. He would be relatively cheap to get and other than tattoo hate ha a relatively clean record. I love what he did at Ohio State and think he would be great here.

    Yalls thoughts?

  • Move on- we are on probation- that would be a middle finger to the NCAA- not happening!

    Yes

  • For him to be hired he would have to have hearing with NCAA and UT officials. That would give him chance to smooth things over with NCAA and prevent further problems for him and UT. And if we hire Tressel we can't hire Butch Davis or Mullen either because of their NCAA problems.

Yes, but after first few months he would be on the job the restrictions are minimal.

Davis has supposedly been cleared already. Mullen I wouldn't touch. I think the storm's a comin'.

Agree completely about Mullen. But from what I heard Davis is saying he has been cleared but NCAA hasn't made it official. If he has then he should be one of Hart's top candidates if not the top one

Would the end justify the effort or are we just selling our souls to Petrino-lite?

Honestly I am not sure. But Based on the hearing I believe the NCAA could nullify the hiring if it violates Tressels or UTs probation. In regards to him being Petrino lite I think he's a better coach than Petrino so maybe the nickname should be reversed JMO. And I am more comfortable with Tressel than Petrino. Petrino is such a polarizing coach it would divide fanbase

Petrino lite? Butch Davis is a champion. At this point I would take him in heartbeat. This is America, gotta take risk to get the gold.

If he comes to UT and wins and he would win then the orange sweater vest would be most popular outfit in town

  • Hey, feeling for you guys. Honestly not understanding why filling this job has been difficult for you. I'm PSU alum living in Nashville..a few thoughts on the Sweatervest..

    Tressell is a good coach.

Remember a couple of things - be sure you're fully aware

    1. Very conservative offense, stifling defense. OSU's punter got a lot of action, but he's a ball control coach. Alot like Les Miles, but more buttoned up. Not a big passing game guy. I can remember many defensive struggles between JT and Paterno. Lots of 10-6, 12-9 games.

    2. Tressell's entire career was in Ohio. He made hay locking down the state. Not sure the relationships he has beyond that state in recruiting.

    3. His success is largely based on cheating. Documented cases of him helping payers get paid go all the way back to Youngstown State in 99/00. He was investigated by the FBI at both YSU and OSU. OSU players were found to be working with a Columbus drug dealer funneling money to players.

My only question is, can he recruit outside of Ohio and without paying kids thru shady means.

Maybe he can...I dunno. If I were interviewing him, these are the questions I would have. Maybe he can overcome them.

  • Of the two, Petrine or Tressel, I would take Tressel in a New York minute, but the show cause penalty is too much for UT to take on at this time. The answer is to get a competent AD and then interview coaches, since UT doesn't have a competent AD the Vols are hosed and will have to overpay for an average coach.

I'm a Buckeye fan, I like Tressel's winning ways, but I did not like his offense and he's about as exciting as watching paint dry. (But he does know how to win rivalry games, just ask any Michigan fan that happens to be around.)

Best of luck to UT, get a good coach because when I retire and move to Tennessee, I'd like to support a winning program.

Columbus drug dealer funneling money to players? You mean the tattoo artist that was buying their stuff? Don't make it out to be something more than what it was like all these kids were messed up in some crazy drug game.

He wasn't investigated by the FBI at OSU...he was contacted to let him know some of his players were talking to a guy there were targeting.

At YSU, the FBI was looking into a booster, not Jim Tressel.

Don't come off spouting incorrect stuff if you're going to badmouth the guy. He's had his issues in the past, its true, but you're making it out like he ran an underground crime syndicate.

I've been preaching Jim Tressel for 3 weeks and getting laughed at. Hopefully, we can lose the sanctimony and maje the one move that will take us back to Rocky Top! I'm totally with you .

You really need to look at Davis' record compared to Tressel's. Its like Dooley against Lombardi.
