Jim Tressel - Hear Me Out

  • there have been a few of us on the Tressel train since this thing started, and i wish it would start to pick up some steam the way this search is going.. You will not find another potential hire out there with his credentials. How can we be seriously thinking about hiring the like of Butch Jones while Tressel is out there? Yes he has a show cause, but the price to pay is extremely small imho for the quality of coach you get in return. I HAVE to believe that Tressel has learned his lesson and will stay on the straight and narrow. The only thing that was ever demonstrated that Tressel did was not timely report the "tattoo-gate" to his compliance officer at OSU, and it snowballed from there.

It comes down to this simply - are we going to accept mediocrity as a fan base for the foreseeable future and be happy to compete for the table scraps off the floor with the vanderbilts and kentucky's? Or are we going to take our rightful seat at the table and feast with UGA, UF, SC, Alabama, LSU..? You can only do that with an elite head coach, and there is one in Akron waiting for our call..

Totally agree. We need to recruit at a high level. If we take an up and comer we won't. Tressel can flat out coach and would bring in really good players. I think you take the risk.

    I WANT WINNERS!

Hey, feeling for you guys. Honestly not understanding why filling this job has been difficult for you. I'm PSU alum living in Nashville..a few thoughts on the Sweatervest..

    Tressell is a good coach.

Remember a couple of things - be sure you're fully aware

    1. Very conservative offense, stifling defense. OSU's punter got a lot of action, but he's a ball control coach. Alot like Les Miles, but more buttoned up. Not a big passing game guy. I can remember many defensive struggles between JT and Paterno. Lots of 10-6, 12-9 games.

    2. Tressell's entire career was in Ohio. He made hay locking down the state. Not sure the relationships he has beyond that state in recruiting.

    3. His success is largely based on cheating. Documented cases of him helping payers get paid go all the way back to Youngstown State in 99/00. He was investigated by the FBI at both YSU and OSU. OSU players were found to be working with a Columbus drug dealer funneling money to players.

My only question is, can he recruit outside of Ohio and without paying kids thru shady means.

Maybe he can...I dunno. If I were interviewing him, these are the questions I would have. Maybe he can overcome them.

    3. Is completely false, the players did get tats for gear. This all came to light from a sep DEA investigation in which a columbus based Att was consulting with the tat artist Rife and while at the parlor noticed all the gear. He then notified OSU and the cover up begain. There was no funneling of drug money to players! Still wrong none the less! As far as paying players thru shady means, the players made bad choices and were punished accordingly. Their att still maintains with cell phone records that they were present, they just didn't report their hours correctly.

Dude, if you believe your statement #3 is correct then you need to review the facts. OSU players were not being paid by a Columbs drug dealer, you've got the facts wrong, I hope you go back and research the issue and realize the error of your statement, but in true Penn State fashion, you'll probably think you have it all right and go on believing what you wrote. Maybe Penn State should of looked deeper at their own issue and could of spared a lot of people a lot of hurt.

For any PSU fan, alum to refer to another program as shady is laughable!

  • I think Tressel would be interested and deserves a call and offer at the least. And the fact that Penn State was able to go through a coaching search after Paterno is ridiculous

They did not get caught cheating....there were no unfair advantages gained for what went down. What ocurred was a lot worse and we should have been punished fully agreed, but they ran a clean program from a football and ncaa compliance perspective.

Stil has three years left on his show cause. My understanding is that show cause comes with recruiting restrictions as well - can't recruit off campus, etc.

His penalties also include a five-game suspension.

Tennessee is on probation and that probation just got extended - so hiring a coach like Tressel on a show-cause would cause great scrutiny for the program. The NCAA would be waiting in the bushes for the first secondary violation and then drop the hammer.

Don't think he can be an option right now.

So your basically saying that NCAA would consider this a slap in the face?

Penn St had to get death penalty. Now NCAA is even more of a farce. No scandal I hope will ever be able to touch what happened there and the university will forever be immediately connected to Sandusky. The fact they played this year is a shame in my opinion
