  • Thanks for posting the link watauga. I don't see how anyone could disagree with the column. There has been times that I have strongly disagreed with Adams, but in this case I fully agree with his comments. It appears that the "Sunfense" is going to do to Coach Dooley, barring a last minute miracle, what the Clawfense did to Coach Fulmer.

  • He sure didn't hold back. Nothing not factual though. Changes have to be made it's fairly obvious. 11,000 season tickets not purchased this year, most since renovation. Next year that # will only increase. You don't have to be a finance major to know that if you keep Dooley you would lose more $ next year than just replacing him.

You have good points drizz. Let's play a game of "what if's". What if somehow, Tennessee wins out beating Mizzou 45-42, Vandy 48-45 and Kentucky 51-42? Assuming that Gruden is not ready to leave MNF and the powers that be retain Coach Dooley, does Coach Dooley retain Sunseri?

Is there anything, and I do mean anything since I've been a strong Dooley supporter, that could give a glimmer of hope that the defense can be better in 2013? I have accepted that there is a talent gap in the upper echelon of the SEC, but I cannot wrap my mind around how we surrendered over 700 yards to a Troy team.

I guess I am simply looking for anything to grasp onto at this time. With Franklin at QB next week, with his passing ability and running, I am not too excited about next week's game. Being an optimist, it is very difficult to find anything about this defense that gives me hope.

If Coach Dooley is retained, he will once again be on the hot seat. If we were to fire Sunseri who would possibly want to walk into this situation at UT. I don't think you could get anybody good. I doubt Hart would give out a 3 year deal to coach, and I doubt any coach would come here knowing if we don't win 8 or 9 games next year he will be out...

So if Dooley stays, i think Sal probably will to. Thats why I want both of them gone.

  • He has to be fired. He won't be able to get a good coordinator with no job security, or recruit at any sort of real competitive level. Giving him another year is just putting the next guy in the same sort of situation Dooley walked into, rock bottom. At least if we fire him after this season next season the roster looks somewhat capable. We lose our entire offensive and defensive lines after next year.

  • If Dooley returns - would Kevin Steele come into this fire storrm?

  • thanks for posting.

I keep coming back to same conclusion no matter what I read, If you think the Tenn Football was your business and you were owner which also owned several other businesses that relied on your Football business to provide support to growth of your under performing businesses such the other sports that need Football revenue, what action would you take?

I keep coming back to a whole new change is needed! You are loosing your brand, customers stopped coming, and the future doesn't look bright.

What is holding you back is lack of funds to pay off the future debt accurred through not so smart obligations made by prior management and current Head Coach.

I suggest you can not do what you have to do to clean house and make the hire of the decade. Grudden doesn't fit that mold. Does TCU coach fit, Cincinnati, Toledo coach, John Chavis with a great offensive cordinator, a Peyton Manning,

For those who like Dooley, I like you have immense respect for him. He is a first class person, very bright, model citizen, but frankly not a very good coach. You know there are others who are great people but can not execute at the next level, He is one of those.

He may be worth keeping within the athletic office in a capacity that would allow Tenn to renogiate a contract to push the payements out.

Mr Hart has tought challenge over the next 60 days as it will define his legacy at Tenn.

  • Adams cherry picked this story. It's a gimme. Defense is bad... Fire Sal... Fire Dooley. We all said the same things minutes after the game. No news here.

Well...the next guy will have a full roster and upperclassman, so not exactly the same situation.

@Drizz - 100% agree about getting a big time DC in to replace Sal being near impossible with CDD on the hot seat, but we honestly just need someone who is capable. That would be a huge upgrade, considering just about every other DC has managed to build a better defense than UT this year.

  • He may have cherry picked the story, as you say WV-Vol, but at least he did. I, for one, think the UT beat writers have inexplicably been way too easy w/ Sunseri and this unacceptable product he is putting on the field. I am not an Adams aplolgist by any stretch yet, when I read this column late last night my initial thought was "about time".

    Rose4UT

  • At this point, Dooley is a lame duck coach. Whether he gets fired at the end of this season or next doesn't matter, but he will be gone. Our schedule next year gets harder. So there is no way that they fire Sunseri and pay his buyout, overpay for a new coordinator that probably won't come anyway because Dooley is doomed just to try to improve the D next year. Only need to flush this turd once IMO.

    VolBaller33

  • The job is so much more attractive than it was in January 2010...and DD get's the credit for that. A coach with half a motivational bone in his body could inspire this current team to play better. It's painfully obvious to me, and I never played organized football.
I've already said goodbye to Dooley.

  • Good find. I agree.

    utkdominic

  • Our defense is atrocious and doesn't seem to be getting any better. It actually seems to be getting worse.

    ol dad

  • Agree on all counts. An absolutely pathetic job of coaching by Sunseri and Dooley.

I agree. It takes a lot of balls to write what Adams wrote. He is not an anonymous blogger, or a national writer outside Knoxville. He is local and I'm sure these coaches know him personally and will hear about the article if thy don't read it themselves. Kudos to him for writing what a growing percentage of the fan base is thinking. It's not new analysis or groundbreaking reporting, but I think it's pretty significant that even local writer are now coming out with such strong statements.
