John Adams--is it just me or

I don't care for name calling but this is a site for the discussion of things that pertain to UT and the opinions about Adams pertain to UT. He puts himself in the public arena with his comments and he is therefore fair game for reverse commentary. I certainly hope you understand our feelings just as I understand that you have the right to shut down that commentary. When it does cross the line into personal attacks I am in complete support of your stopping that in it's tracks.

As I said, we're not opposed to fair criticism as long as it's directed at the content more so than the writer. No need for name-calling and some of the other things I've seen in this thread and the other thread that pertains to the same topic.

OK, folks, let's take it easy. It's fine to be a little critical of a column you don't particularly like, but we certainly don't approve of any personal attacks here. That's not what we're about.

How can someone like that write for Tennessee? I have never read an article that doesn't totally bash Tennessee. His articles all remind of my grumpy old neighbor; everything is always crap.

  • His comments in a story earlier "Pat is the coach in name only" is an example of his poor judgement. I don't read his articles anymore. It is a shame that we don't have more choices in this market. He is the sports editor in name only. He missed the class on writers being objective.I really believe, he writes to create controversy. Thank goodness for technology. I don't have to read his trash.

  • Guys, there is a lot of truth in that article. Adams is pretty fair in his articles and his assessment of our program is not very far off. He is paid to be honest and in turn we should also be honest with where our football program is right now. I'm not saying to not be optimistic, because I am optimistic. My point is to take a step back and really think about what he writes without letting your love for UT affect your comprehension of his articles.

Once we are good again, I'm sure Adams will be saying so. Don't forget he picked UT to beat Florida this year.

  • I have to say, I generally feel that Adams gets a bad rap, but raises interesting points on occasions. It is downright despicable though to blast a young kid for an obvious mistake that he has suffered the consequences for. I know Tennessee passed up a local talent for similar character issues, but throughout this past season, stayed in contact to let him know a scholarship was still possible. Dooley has given many players second chances (i.e. J. Jackson) and Bonner appears to have learned from his mistakes. Hopefully it all pans out and this kid doesn’t take a poor attempt at reporting to heart.

Allow me to share my perspective on that. I have a rule that I follow when it comes to expressing my disapproval. In sports, If it's a kid or team in high school or college and they're not getting it done, I don't boo them on the field. They'
re kids. But at an NFL game where the players are well compensated to get the job done, well they are fair game to receive any heckling or booing or expressions of displeasure with their performance that come from the fans. I believe the same to be true of any person paid to do a job. Adams is a professional journalist=he is open door to criticism of his work. I would never personally attack the posters on here because they're offering their opinions free of charge. This is probably a warped perspective. At any rate , at keeping with the spirit of this site that I love so much, I will refrain from any further name calling even when it was directed at a paid professional. Thanks to W/K/R for an outstanding job and to the posters for their thought provoking remarks. GO VOLS!

I never truly believe John Adams and his articles. The vast majority of his most notable columns are negative, and this is just another in a long line of false ridiculousness. If he truly hated the program as much as he makes it sound he would have moved to another market long ago. He makes his money just like Clay Travis and Finebaum; likewise he is to be ignored. Less readership for old dog columnists equals no jobby job for old dog columnists.

Posted this in the other Adams thread.

  • It was an appropriate question. Dooley has emphasized signing players of high character. This kid clearly has questions regarding his character. Asking the coach to explain why he was willing to take a chance on him was very appropriate and helps this kid going forward due to the response.

Ryan i agree with your sentiment. However, that guy has made me want the part of my life back that was spent reading so many of his articles. I just really don't like what he brings to the job. So many of his articles are off the wall and leave me scratching my head in wonder.

  • Coach Dooley appears to have been very good at handling discipline with his team. With very few exceptions his players have stayed out of trouble over the past few years. I do believe that Dooley took into consideration Bonner's past problem and performed his due diligence with the young man. I also take into account what Wes Rucker has said about how on average this class is very well spoken and mature. I believe Coach Dooley should be given the benefit of the doubt regarding Bonner. Only time will tell. Hopefully the kid will be a good addition to the team and will grow and prosper under the program and will represent it well.

is this guy always down on the VOLS? in the press conf I believe that it was him that asked about character. Moment the question was asked all I could think is what will is article say.

How can this guy get the attention with his neg. point of view of the VOLS and he is a beat writer.

I don't read his story and maybe posting on this guy is not good because it brings attention to him but man I just can't stand this guy.

I don't want sunshine pumper but come on every story he writes is about something neg.

just had to get that off my chest.

Just wait until we start winning and then he'll go from mentioning the UK loss and how bad the coaching is in every other column and start digging up every little mistake that our players have ever made. Also you'll hear about how many "thugs" we field. If i was Dooley and he started that character crap I'd just tell him to go look at the arrest and the amount of trouble my kids have been since I've been here and until you can show me that I run a "loose" ship shut your mouth and go find something else to bash us about.

  • If you can't read a columnist without attacking him over his opinions, then don't read him. If you continue to read things that upset you to the point of attacking a writer personally, that is your problem, not his.

When his column gets 40+ comments (in two threads) on a website that isn't even his, it is impossible to say he's not generating readers for his newspaper.

I disagree with Mr. Adams WAY more than I agree with him, but for some reason his piece is the second thing I look at in the paper everyday.

    I'll hang up and listen.

I agree with your post 100 percent, Mac. I like reading different perspectives on the program, and I often concede he's made a good point even as I disagree with it. I don't let it make me angry, I let me make me think and consider what I haven't before.

The best sports columnists have always ripped the teams they cover. It's just a bit unusual to have the old style practiced in a market as small and conservative as Knoxville, and Adams has carried the flaming torch around these parts for years.

Mac b--I believe I ended my statement and included the fact I was torn to post because I don't want him to get any attention. I quit reading him several years ago and fortunatly I have the St Louis Post Dispatch but very little coverage of the Vols. With MU getting into the SEC East I am hopeful that we will get more expanded coverage. That said maybe that is his sole purpose to write the way he does. IDK but I do know that I don't read him and could care less his opinion. I try and ignore him until I was listening to the presser and heard his question.
