Jones emerges as UT front-runner

IMO, he would be a great hire and land big time players. Look at his record? My kid will definitely be interested in UT if Coach Jones gets the job!

Not completely trashing Butch Jones...
...But, Arkansas outhired us.
Both coaches have similar resumes. Both coaches have midwestern ties, and very little southern ties. But, Bielema's career has been in a power conference. Jones's has been in the Big East.

come on people. This guy is way more proven than dooley was. Dooley only had one good season and the Vols hire him. Butch Jones has coached 6 seasons and has had 5 winning seasons. He has been in the Big East and has shared the conference title both years. He is way better than dooley. I think he can get the job done. He has had 4 offers and turned them all down. He wants to be here. I am excited for him

The guy is a good coach and IMO, surround him with a great staff/recruiters and he'll do fine. He's not my first choice by any means, but he wants the job and isn't shying away from the challenge that lies ahead for him, that for me, is a confidence builder in him.

Edited to say this does not excite me and I am very disappointed but you never know. If he wins I guess this will all go away. If not it will take care if it's self. Tickets will be easy to get for a while I think.

Yeah that wasn't really a knock on Jones. I was just pointing out some legit criticism. It is fair to say that he'll be new to the big leagues and all, but he's done more than Dooley did before he got here. Just trying to get some balance in the "next Dooley" argument.

Bad analogy there. There was no guarantee that UT would ever call Jones, especially given the hype over Gruden, then Gundy and (especially) Strong. He took a big chance by turning down Kentucky and Colorado in the hopes that Tennessee would come calling. You don't pass up that type of opportunity twice unless you want that third option.

While not the home run hire we wanted, it could end up being a good hire.
I think his track record is appealing, but I don't really want a Midwestern guy as our coach.

This guy is a good coach. He had eight losses his first year implementing his system and the last two years he has done really well. I think he will do a good job for UT, hope he get's it.

Let me say one thing: the guy is a good coach and a vast upgrade over Derek Dooley.
That said, he is not the guy I would be after. I would prefer Roman or Mcintiyre or even someone off the radar like Paul Rhoads over him. I do not like the way he has whored himself out and essentially played Cincinatti this offseason.
If they hire him I will support him, but I really hope we tap the breaks and go research some other candidates before making a panic hire.
I would take him over Kirby Smart however.

If he can stop certain Juniors not named Hunter, Bray, or Patterson from leaving and secure a top 15 class he deserves a second look from the naysayers, otherwise he needs to win a big game first. Nobody should go all in again on a second tier coach until they earn it.
