Jones emerges as UT front-runner

    We've been linked to so many good names out there and these are the two we get? The lowest two on the totem pole and who practically nobody wants. This is like swinging for the fences the first few pitches and then bunting on a 3-2 count. It better work out for Hart's sake.

    And Kirby is way worse. Why would we dump Dooley and give him 5 mil just to go hire a coordinator with no HC experience. Jones is a much better option than Smart when you're just looking at resumes. So I guess we either take Jones or dirt.

    The swing in the search is what is killing me. It goes from top guys straight to small school guys/coordinators. No in between guys or slight risk guys?

    Strong was in the top tier and Jones isn't? Read the comparisons between the two higher in this thread. Jones compares quite well.

  • For all the people trashing Jones before he is even hired and definitely before he coaches his first game shame on you. This shows ignorance . He's a winner. He recruits well to a place that could care less about sports. He's young and spirited and by god he wants to be here. He wants to be here. He's turned down 3 places just to have a CHANCE to coach at UT. I would be embarrassed if he was reading this garbage. Be mad at hart if u don't get your guy by Dont be mad at Jones and for gods sake why on he heck would you turn your backs on these student athletes that come to play every Saturday no matter who we have as coach. Turn your season tics in. And if/when we get back to prominence I hope I can find a ticket . Fair weather fans suck.

    +1 Agreed, Winkle. Fair weather fans make me sick; and I for one will give Jones my full support from day one if he's hired. He may not be my first choice, but since he actually WANTS to be here, why not give him a shot?

  • Ok guys I'll admit that I was one of those people that cringed at the name butch jones, but now I think it's a decent hire that I can can support. I said in another post that I can't support this hire but after reading about him I was wrong. I can support a "Coach of the year" a man who has won more than one conf. Championship, and a man who has won more with less talent. Strong has done ok but look at the talent he has compared to jones, and jones wins more. Jones seems to be a GREAT player developer and a GREAT Xs and Os coach. Dooley was not either. And I don't think strong is as good of a Xs and Os as jones. I think if you give Jones what Tennessee can give him he will win and he may just win pretty fast. JMO but I think it's a good one.

    Bad analogy there. There was no guarantee that UT would ever call Jones, especially given the hype over Gruden, then Gundy and (especially) Strong. He took a big chance by turning down Kentucky and Colorado in the hopes that Tennessee would come calling. You don't pass up that type of opportunity twice unless you want that third option.

    Sorry the analogy is spot on. What a surprise you think Jones is a good hire just like you thought Dooley was a good coach.

    Look at the talent STrong has compared to Butch Jones??? Are you serious?? Cincy has wayyyyyy more talent then Louisville has, up until this year and forward. Do you know why? Strong has brought in better players then Butch Jones

  • It's amazing to me how little support you guys have for this guy. If I remember correctly none of you "athletic directors" wanted Brian Kelly. Instead we went with Kiffin. How did that turn out for us. So what if we didnt get a hall of fame coach. We got the only person who wanted to be our coach. The only one who thought it was the best job out there. It sounds like to me he has more orange in him than half of the people on this site! If he is the new coach go support him cause from the start of the search he is the only one not trying to get a raise!
