Jones happy with first Vols' haul

Tennessee's 2013 football recruiting class wasn't a grand slam on paper. But considering the circumstances, Butch Jones was pleased with his first haul as the Vols' coach.

  • He should be happy, he wasn't use to this kind of recruiting in Cincy. Also most of these recruits were Dooley's, were they not?

  • I wish people wouldn't get caught up in the 11/14 in the SEC. The numbers and STARs are just people's opinion. Don't get caught up in 7th vs 11th etc.. We have signed a 2nd tier recruiting class period. Obviously Bama, UGA, FL etc are top tier classes. I think the coaching staff did a good job of getting into the league and getting relationships started for the future. I cant wait to see how 2014 recruiting class turns out. On to Spring Practice!

  • We have seen time and time again that coaches who know how to develop athletes can make an enormous difference. And that increases exponentially when the players themselves are "all in", intent on improving themselves and their team. This class is rated, at this point, on what a bunch of people think about their measurables and their performances in 20 or so different places. They will be remembered for how they are coached and how they develop at one place: UT.

Great analogy. I think a class is truly judged about three years from now IMO.

I agree totally! A 3 star doesn't have near the ego as a 5 star either and may just turn out to be a better player.

Recruiting is a tricky business. A commitment isn't committed until he's actually on the roster. Butch Jones' staff flipped eight players (three on National Signing Day and five others previously), convincing them to come play for the Vols. Jones spoke with the media Feb. 6, 2013 on National Signing Day.

  • Welp, lets see some spread offense then!

  • Actually Only 10 of the players were Dooley players, and of those 10 only 9 were actually committed, and North was long considered a NC lean. Then Carr was considered a soft commit and likely to choose AL due to TN having done so poorly before Dooley was even fired. And Cameron Sutton was conidering other options. So technically 7 players were truly comitted.

To win the battles for these 5 star kids TN is going to have to win more games its that simple. And Butch Jones has a track record of winning alot more than he loses so I think TN will win more games next year! Because Jones is walking into a very different situation than did Dooley. He is going to have the best offensive line in the conference quite possibly the nation. Most analyst believe our entire offensive line will be drafted with both James and Tiny being first round prospects at the tackle positions! Our D line has talent and depth (next year at least) and with going back to our traditional scheme should help. Additionally Randolph will be back Keep in mind he was a freshmen all SEC player if memory serves correctly, and McNeil will be a sophmore with Moore and Brewer also at the safety position it should be a strength. We all know that AJ Johnson and Curt Maggitt are excellent LBs so there should be another position of strength. With this in mind I have a very tough time not seeing this team able to compete.

  • Good job coaches on bringing in the players, now coach them which I know you can, remember Kiffin took Crompton whom some say was the worst QB in vols history to i still can"t believe a NFL tryout, so next year go watch a team with confidence and the resolve to compete. Thanx Coach Jones for giving me hope again.

Nice observation but I couldn't bear to look at the overall SEC rankings..Talk about a banner year of recruiting in the SEC..Jones is a winner but even if you brought Neyland and Lombardi form the grave to coach we would still get drilled by LSU;Bama;GA and FLA.. Just way too much disparity in talent..Bama;GA and FLA are racking and stacking RB's while we're scraping for any 3 star reach of a back we can snag..This just will NOT get us out of the cellar..Better days ahead but we have tons of ground to make up for
