Just getting home from watching Vols practice

  • I was able to see the last half hour of practice at Science Hill from one of the baseball fields overlooking Steve Spurrier field. Nothing earth shattering, but here is what I saw:

-Saw a few kickoff returns. They had been working on special teams stuff for about 30 min before I got there. CP84 was in the red jersey and did not participate. Devrin Young looked really quick, and was able to field a kickoff and take it the width of the field and cut the corner on the coverage by the 30 yard line. The machine kicking it to them was kicking it into the wind, and only getting the ball to the 5-10 yard line.

-Next was a FG drill with Palardy kicking it from 30 yards and moving back to eventually a 50 yd FG. He was kicking it low, and it was going through the goal posts at about half way up the height of the posts. His last attempt was for 50 yds and was blocked by the defense and landed at the 10 yd line. Bullock came in next and was hitting his easily. His kicks were much higher and crossing the bar near the top of the goal post heights where the flags are. His kicks all went in too with the exception of the 50 yd attempt, which he pulled low and left (looked like a golf shot of mine).

-Last was a hurry up drill from the 50 yard line. Bray got the first rep, and fired a 50 yard bomb to an open WR (I think DR21) in the endzone for a TD, so that ended quick for the first team. Worley got the next rep, and completed a few passes, the first was a short slant to the middle, another was quick out to the sideline. He had a few incompletions, and the second team defense held their own. They eventually got it down to the goalline, but practice ended and they huddled as a team in the endzone.

-I was 150+ yds away from where they huddled, but Dooley didn't seem pleased. He was yelling at them pretty good, and his words echoed to where we were every now and then. "We didn't come up here to..." was one I definitely caught. Coach Sal's voice is BOOMING. I could hear him just as well as the guys standing next to me. Having him on the sideline will be big. Even in Neyland the players will be able to hear him.

-Rumor is that the scrimmage will be at DB tomorrow instead of SH since DB's field is closed off. There were a lot of fans on the perimeter of the campus this afternoon, and Dooley had some guys in green shirts telling folks not to take pictures. I'm sure he won't be pleased at how easy it was to watch things.

Yeah, there was an obvious difference in the heights of their kicks. Both of them had a bad kick from 50, but from all other distances Bullock's kicks were more impressive.

There were about 20 people standing there where I was, and when Palardy's kick was blocked there was a collective "ughhh" with noted frustration. Hopefully Palardy gets his stuff together, but if not, then I wouldn't be surprised if we finish the season with Bullock kicking FG's.

I wasn't there, but I went "ughhhh" when I read about the block!

Yep, buts its a good 40-45 minutes from Milligan. Dooley may just have to get over it or practice at Milligan.
