Justin Worley

  • Can anyone explain how they rate players? Looking for reason why Justin Worley is a 3 start and 87 rating after all he has done this year..

    volman2010

  • They say he lacks arm strength, and that he is a system qb. That's what I have read anyways.

  • Worley has been rated a three-star prospect by other recruiting services, too. Not that our rating is necessarily right because others have similar ratings for him, but 247Sports is definitely not alone in that general assessment of him.

Remember, though, Erik Ainge was a three-star prospect, too. If Worley turned out to be another Erik Ainge, I doubt many people would complain.

  • Ainge was a three-star on Scout but a four-star on Rivals, and prior to 247 (which we still have to gauge you guys' evaluations over time, I'd say), I'd take Rivals rankings over Scout's , though maybe not this year. I would complain if Worley turned out to be another Ainge. He was never the same after the injury, and Cutcliffe had to take away any downfield/risky passing from him to even have a moderately successful offense during his senior season. It was three step-throw, and that's it. He also cost us an SEC Championship game win over LSU with his ints.

I'm not knocking on Ainge, but he was kind of a disappointment to me, and I have higher expectations for Worley.

  • I think Ainge was a very good college quarterback for three of his four years. He obviously was pretty bad as a sophomore, but I thought Cutcliffe did a pretty impressive job of getting him back on track in his junior and senior years. He was good enough for the Jets to think he had some promise up until his off-field problems came to light earlier this year.

  • I'm with Ghost on this one....

My two ingrained Ainge images are ragdoll at LSU in 05 and SECC 07 pick 6.

Having said that, I prayed for the return of Ainge suffering through the Waynesville Worm-burning years.....

I'll have Barton or JC come on and give their full take, but let's remember that being a 3-star and having a rating of 87 certainly doesn't mean we hate him. biggrin

Considering all the high school quarterbacks in the country, he's got to be in the top 1%.

I have been told Jim Chaney likes him very much, which is really all that matters, ultimately.

I'll get someone more "official" to chime in, though.

    Thx.

  • I agree with the Ghost re Ainge.blackeye

  • Yeah but The only other GR player of the year we had was Manning.. Looks to me that folks are letting a few rate this guy.. Did 247 actually go and see him play or review tape?

    volman2010

  • For what it's worth, a couple of people close to the South Carolina program told me Worley had "plenty" of arm strength ... enough to make any throw you'd need in most college offenses.

Of course, that begs the question, "Then what is it?" Mechanics? Does he just spin it funny? It quite obviously doesn't seem like a character or intelligence issue, but I could never get a straight answer on that from those guys.

I'm sure that leaves even more questions than some of y'all had to begin with, but that's something I heard recently from a couple of people over that way.

Our analysts have seen him on several occasions, including the entire week of practice at the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. Again, they like him - just not as much as some others.

This doesn't mean anything, obviously, but Worley is from South Carolina and wasn't offered by Clemson or the Gamecocks to my knowlege.

Again, I'm no analyst and offers obviously don't tell the whole story ... but it seems a bit odd that the two big in-state programs didn't offer. I'm not familiar with their depth charts or other commits, either - so that may have something to do with it.

    Just saying. twocents

  • Also, here is our rankings explainer which details what the numerical rankings of the recruits means.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    247Sports Football Recruiting Rankings Explained

At 247Sports, each recruit that we evaluate will be assigned a numerical rating as well as a star rating. The rankings are determined by our recruiting analysts and input from our network of scouts.

  • System QB or not, he seems to just win. Our staff likes him enough to take him, which must mean he would fit our system. Therefore if he fits our system and masters it then he wins. In a few years we end up looking back on how the recruiting services undervalued his skills. There's no problem from my perspective. We all want the top class for bragging rights, but in the end, "just win baby".

  • Agree with all those who could care less that he is a 3-star. I became a believer when I saw this Youtube of the Northwestern vs South Pointe game in which he lit them up for five touchdowns despite the fact Clowney was belting him every other play. The game was on ESPN, so you can call it Worley's coming out party.

  • I have been reading that Justin may be redshirted next year. Is that a viable option? What happens if Bray is injured?
Would you rather have Worley or Simms as your quarterback?

Worley said he'd have no problem redshirting next season. Makes sense to me, assuming Simms comes back.

  • I really hope Simms comes back. I'd like to see Worley get redshifted and have two to three years to play depending how long Bray stays.

Agreed, Tennessee. All indications are that Worley is hard worker. He clearly has been successful on the field and in the classroom. Guys like that tend to be willing to go the extra mile. Who knows, maybe his work-ethic and attitude will push Bray to work harder, too.

    Kevin Ryan

  • I believe Clemson did try to get Worley to set up a visit, but Worley said he was not going to reopen his recruiting. And yes he has said several times that he would not have a problem with being redshirted, whatever was best for the team. How many Gatoraid Players of the Year would say that. I think we are fortunate to have him.

  • With what he showed no doubt he could do to SC just by calling the coach.. Nothing to prove outside of experts that apparently slap any states HS football beside FL, Ala, Tex and LA.. But 5000 yards is pretty good even if jut playing local rec teams..

So to say I disagree the SC schools did not want him is an understatement.. More like he did not want them and told them up front..no need to beg a kid that want come and cause other kids to say hey the best don't want to go there so why would I.. Meaning SC played politics on this one.. Kind of like why we shout stop recruiting Mem kids unless they are will to 100% sign.. It hurts our standing in Memphis...

  • Isn't Worley an EE, if so we should get a better idea about him from you guys' reports from spring practice right?

  • I laugh when people say he "doesn't have a great arm". when will ANALysts get it through their heads that having enough arm strength to make the throws asked of you is all you need? it's funny that Clempson and SCjunior not offering(of which you really have no idea why) is a reason to take off points, but LSU, Florida, FSU, North Carolina and Notre Dame offers don't add points? what about that Stanford offer? I guess Jim Harbaugh doesn't know a good quarterback when he sees one. arm strength at qb is comparable to having 4.52 speed at HB in stead of running 4.55. having a "laser-rocket" arm can be pretty useless if you can't tell the difference between 3-deep and man coverage.

here's a big armed qb you guise should check out and give us a rating on....
