Keeping CDD

  • I know this line of thought is unpopular with many Vol fans, BUT, I would like to make a case for extending Coach Dooley's contract for at least one more year--- and do it now! I think he has the ability and pedegree to be a Frank Beamer in the long run. He has recruited well under very adverse circumstances and now has the assistants to get us back where we belong. This will let the players, recruits, and coaches take a deep breath, relax, and do their jobs without looking over their shoulders all the time. Give this group a fighting chance!

I like your premise but the comparison to Beamer is limiting because we are historically a better program than VT.

  • I agree. But the other ones that want him gone would raise hell and I want as few distractions as possible. Sailing in calm waters now. (Knock on wood)

  • Maybe...but it better be a small buyout. Dude still has to prove himself in the win/loss column IMO.

  • Dooley has been an unbelievable salesman up to this point, and I'm sure his law degree helped him with that. But let's face it, he still hasn't shown enough on the field to get a contract extension just yet. I believe he has the best (and possibly only) chance to win this year. I personally believe this year will be the best chance to see how good of a football coach Dooley is.

  • Well it's said that in order to be successful you must surround yourself with successful people. I think he can cross that one off of his to do list. The pieces are in place for this to be a successful season. GO VOLS!

  • guys has worked hard but needs to come away with some wins this year as he certainly has the talent to possibly win 8 or 9 games this year

  • We just lost to Kentucky. We just lost to Kentucky. We just lost to Kentucky.

Plus Cincinnati is his signature win.

I am a CDD fan, I think we will have a good year, but you can't extend a coach who hasn't beaten anyone and ended last year with a loss to Kentucky and a dysfunctional team. The standards have to be higher at UT.

Exactly. I believe Dooley's seat is not nearly as hot as some would think, and that he will be here beyond the 2012 season unless there is a terrible collapse. I also think it wouldn't hurt for Hart to say something to this effect (I know he won't, it isn't how he works). I see what you mean about Dooley could be like Beamer in running a clean program, being a gentleman, etc., but our program has more history and our brand carries much more weight nationally than VT. I do see where you are going with the comparison to Beamer, though.

    ^^^ THIS ^^^

History be dammed. All our history and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. Right now we stink because in our last game we lost to Kentucky who had a wide receiver playing QB and ran about 5 different plays the entire game.

It hurts to read it, but we are not a factor in the division, in the SEC or nationally. Rucker even mentioned how little talk there was about Tennessee football at the SEC meetings a couple of months ago. The early betting lines have us losing to Florida and losing big to Alabama (-17), Georgia (-13.5) and South Carolina (-11). That is what the wagering world thinks of us.

Having said that, I believe we are poised to have the kind of year that gets a head coach an extension and makes a team relevant nationally. However, as of right now we haven't won anything and Dooley hasn't earned an extension.

I totally understand your line of thought but I ask you, when you were a kid, would your parent's pat you on the back and raise your allowance for bringing home a report card full of C's and D's. I know mine sure as hell wouldn't have. You can't give a guy something he hasn't earned. What if we did extend him and then went out and won 5 games this year??? Hart would look like an idiot and people would be calling for HIS head. Bottom line if Dooley wants better recruits, he has to prove he's a better coach ON THE FIELD than what he has been. And we as fans have to except the fact that we aren't going to get the biggest names because right now, WE ARE NOT THAT GOOD! But, we have all the potential to be a force this year and winning games will get us some late recruits this year and put us in great position for recruits next year. Vonn Bell has already said that he grew up a UT fan and would love to play here, but he needs to see us win some games. So CDD and crew needs to go out and do it............. And THEN we can talk an extension

Agreed... I love the job that Dooley has done so far with bring in the best player and coaches, considering the state of the program when he assumed command, but he must earn an extension with the win column.

I want to emphasize that I am not anti-Dooley - far from it. And I am not overly concerned with the Kentucky loss as every coach, including Saban, has had bad losses in their career. But his extension must be earned. For all the good Dooley has done, he knows better than anyone that the bottom line is winning. And the time to win is now.

I agree with you. I'm 100% behind DD and I know they can win at least 10 games.
The players seem to be more focused this year than last and I know for a fact they have better coaching.

  • I Wouldn't be opposed to one of those extensions that are just for public perception. You know add two years on the contract but lower the buyout starting this year. I really think a public show of support from Hart is all that is needed. None of it really matters though we will know his fate by November 1st.

    bigorange

  • Giving CDD an extension right now wouldn't even boost recruiting in my opinion. Duke rewards 6-6 with an extension because their goal is to be competitive, our goal is to win National Championships. To reward him now would be to sacrifice stability for mediocrity, neither of which is appealing to top recruits.

This is not to say the CDD isn't a good coach or the hasn't improved the program he took over but there is no reason to go all in on him now.

    bavw

  • We run off about 4 to 5 wins in a row to start the year and an extension is issued and accepted. Best case for UT and Dooley. Enhances stability and is earned and gives a kick start to the fence sitter recruits. GBO.

Yesterday I agreed with you, but Ryan made the point that even with a strong start, what if we lose to uga, bama, scar, mizz? They we are 4-4 and still have vandy and miss st.

Nsd is after the season. Why not wait until 8 or 9 games in? That way you know how the season played out and still send the message to this years recruits.
