Kirby Smart

  • I'm going to be the first one to throw this out there and I may be stoned for saying it, but I hope we talk to Kirby Smith and I hope he is the one we hire.

I've heard a lot of people say we don't want another one off the "Nick Saban coaching tree," but the fact is I don't see why that matters. What matters is performance and everyone has seen what he and Saban's defenses have done for four years now. The question I would have and anyone should have is how much has he called the plays on that defense compared to Saban.

The fact is, for me, I'd offer $4 million to Smart before I would have offered that much to Strong. I've seen a lot better results from Smart's defense compared to what Strong has done as a HC in three years. And you know the guy can recruit.

From day 1, Smart was always my number two choice behind Gruden. I think we need a defensive minded coach whose a baller. I think Smart is. And I don't think you can look at Sunseri and Dooley and try to compare what they have done compared to what he may do. Both those guys were position coaches under Saban.

    Vote Smart for 2013.

  • I will and it will not be Kirby.

  • I'm as big of a Kirby Smart supportor on here you will find, but I wouldn't offer him 4 mill. Maybe 3.3-3.5 no more.

    1. He would assemble a great staff
    2. He would recruit very well
    3. He is tough and his energy rubs off on players

His in game HC abilities? That's the question mark.

  • You make some valid points. I wouldn't be devastated by the hire. It's looking better by the hour.

Oh I wouldn't want to pay him $4 mill. I don't think he's worth that much. I don't think Strong was worth that much. But apparently our guys are on a spending spree.

Just saying, if you're going to put out the bank then I'd do it on him rather than Strong. But I'd rather come in at $3 mill.

  • Some people are going to say no to Smart just because he's currently at Alabama. Others will say no because he's a Saban disciple and the last one UT hired didn't work out too well. But you can't deny his ability to run and implement a smashmouth defense that is proven to work in the SEC.

    Auburn offered 3.2 FWIW.

  • Hell to the no! I want no more Bama stinch on the hill. It might be silly but that is where I am. I will re-allocate my medium sized donation to the college of business if Hart goes this small on a hire so big.

Yes you can deny that ability or atleast question it. You don't know whether its Smart or Saban that deserves the credit for that defense, but since Saban's defenses in college have been pretty good, irrespective of the DC, the smart money would be on Saban, as the person who deserves the credit.

  • Dooley and Sunseri were way over their head. If you look back at Sunseri, he only had a handful of experience as a DC to begin with.

Yes, there could be questions of how much direction he has on the defense. But at the same time, I'd also say this. The guy is 36 years old. Young. If he didn't have a good head on his shoulders then why does Nick Saban hand the keys to the Cadillac to a young pup. He could have given it to several others older with much more experience. I think Smart is a smart guy.

And I don't view him as a Bama guy. I view him as an SEC guy. He graduated from Georgia, works now at Bama.

Hiring him to me just keeps it in the southern family.
