Lathers, Thomas, Bart, maybe Waggner... did I miss one?

  • Those are the 4 seniors this team will struggle to replace. Whoever replaces Dooley (if he IS replaced) will have some impressive depth and mature talent next year. First time in a few years they have had leadership from a group of seniors, not just 1 or 2 players and the coaches. It's a shame CDD won't get to enjoy the fruit of his hard labor.

We won't struggle to replace Waggner or Lathers. They are both average players. Lathers had a hell of a game today but him and AJ are to slow. You can afford to have 1 slow LB not 2 on the field.

  • I never thought I would say this, but we will miss Zach Rogers next year. He has become a clutch receiver and a deep threat, and the problem he had with his hands is history.

Frankly, IMO Zach is a better receiver right now than Patterson beause he runs better routes and he gets open.

  • We will not miss Waggner. Once Bonner and Gray learn they playbook they will be fine, they are more athletic then Waggner.

They will be greatly missed, but I was not referring to them being the most talented at their position. If you truly know anything about 3-4, you know Johnson is not playing his natural position, and is at this point, slow for the position he has to play. He will be fine. By the way, that was an extremely fast (4.5) Qback Herm ran down today for such a "slow" LB.

  • I'm with drizzle. Thomas is the only one we will "miss".

You're still talking in terms of talent. Which means I didn't relate my point effectively... leadership is ultimately as important. In some cases more. Next year no matter who the coach is, you'll see.... We'll have more seniors with experience and Tennessee will win more games.

Because leadership played such a huge role this year. We are 3-5.

  • D. Thomas will not be missed, the blocks he misses will be missed in a good way.

P Wag is not going to be missed

    H Lathers will be missed

Like Rocky top said I too would not believe I am typing this but Z. Rogers will be missed.

Thomas won't be missed?! Can't tell if serious. He should be one of the first guards off the board.

I think all of these guys will be missed from an experience standpoint but this team as a whole will be much more experienced and mature next season as Kiffin's "Greatest Class that Never Was" graduates and is replaced by a solid junior class. Hopefully we don't lose too many to the draft.

  • You didn't even read the thread, obviously... you just made my point. There are very few seniors to speak of to lead this year. It's a MAJOR issue. Depth, experience, it is what we've been missing these last few years. It's why we're losing the close ones now! Thank you for helping me with that one.

I am 100% serious on Thomas.

watch the games and watch 71 see what his real grade should be, he misses more than he connects.

Seniors are not the only ones that can lead.

Most look to the QB, and others look to a LB (take M.T. at ND for example). I believe that H. Lathers was the guy that almost all of the D looks to for leadership. Followed closely by AJ, CM, and maybe JS. The O has to look at some of the line for leadership--ZF,Stone, Tiny, and maybe MR?

Leadership has been a problem for couple years, what do you think makes it get better after these couple of seniors are gone?

I'm sorry but what missed blocks by Thomas are you referring to? I'm pretty sure he's on an O-line that has given up the 2nd fewest sacks in the country (behind only Air Force who never throws) and that has almost doubled our RYPG from last year. Can't really say I've noticed ANY of our lineman missing too many blocks this year. Just wondering what you are seeing?

We haven't had any upperclassmen the entire Dooley regime. That was the OP's point. Next year, we will finally have a decent sized, talented senior class. For the most part, you get your leadership, experience and even depth from your seniors. He hasn't had that luxury.

  • Mostly from the fact there will be more Seniors on the 2 deep than this year.

Easy answer=just watch the coaches show from the msu game--the TD watch as 71 comes out and chooses not to hit either of the two defenders. I get tired of watching him swing and miss.

I get that the run game is better, I also get that it could be much better if he did his JOB.

I have also watched on pass protection he is the gap that the blitz comes through on the majority of the blitzs-sack no-throw aways by QB yes or hurries by QB, or back foot throws across his body that get picked.

Just watch him and see what grade you would give him.

I'm skeptical, but I'm not willing to go back and rewatch any games over it. I did see him miss a couple today but gave him a pass because of the quality of opponent.

I'll keep an eye out for it in the future.

Rocky I get what you and he are saying, we knew that CPF's and CLK's guys were not leaders--the board has said numerous times that CPF's classes were way overrated and not that good. That showed with what CLK walked into. Then CLK had bones thugs and harmony as a class that did not survive a full year no leadership there as well. We had to depend on Freshman for leadership CDD's first year and Freshman/Sophmores next (with DR in that group and you see where he is at). I am saying the Defense has more leaders and most are going to be Jr's. The O-Line will be in the best spot for more leadership.

The last two years it was we are young and going to make mistakes--I am sorry that QB is not a leadership spot that is vocal on this team-maybe he leads in practice IDK but he is not a rah rah guy. That is where most people look for the leader.

I do know this, in the UGA/FLA game it looked like a hard hitting hard chargin game on both sides-passion, toughness, and determination. Watching the Vols was not like that game at all. I don't know what it is that was missing but I do know that one game had a brand of football that is what I used to see on the hill and the other did not.

One of the stories posted / written was about the close games we used to win, that was a long time ago and I remember a bunch of them. I remember the way we flew around on the field on both sides of the ball. Maybe that is what I am missing and we are a great team I just don't realize it. But I do know this 0-5 the last three years is a bunch of something I don't want anymore. Having to beat KY to get bowl eligible is not what I want anymore as well. Sick of moral victories from CLK, talk of 1/2 wins from anyone, and most of all just loosing.

A month ago, I told a buddy of mine that if we (a) played hard for 60 minutes, (b) showed improvement from week to week, and (c) looked like a well coached team with technically sound game management I would support retaining Dooley for another year for this very reason. He thought I was crazy.

We have done (a) every single week. That's great, I've been really pleased that even when nobody liked this team they've continued to play for 60 minutes.

We have done (b) at OL and RB. Until this week I haven't seen improvement in any aspect of the defense and the passing game seemed to regress at times. Zach Rogers has been the most consistent WR and while he has played really well, that's disappointing given what we had coming into the season.

We have not done (c) at all. The Alabama game put a big fat ! on that for me, but there were questionable decisions going on all season.

I get what you're saying, and yes Dooley has not been able to play with a full deck in the deepest, toughest conference in college football and you can't expect Fulmerish results without a solid roster. However, for me personally, I have not seen enough indicia that another year will result in Dooley turning things around to continue to support him.

Also, I didn't really think the loss of Izauea Lanier, Austin Johnson, Ben Martin, and Malik Jackson would take our defense from top 30 to bottom 20, but it did.
