Absolutely, it can. An AC sprain is a sprain of the AC joint and can disallow movement of the arm above the head. A "separation" is slightly different and is where the A (acromion) and the C (clavicle) separate from each other to varying degrees, causing soft tissue damage.

Any time that Lathers gets hit in the front or the top of his pads, as with tackling, there is significant risk of re-injury.

If the sprain and separation are mild, he should fully heal in 10-20 days.

    Thanks, Doc! biggrin

  • My 2 Cents: Play him a couple series, but no more than 1 quarter. It lets him get a little more game time and minimizes his risks of making the injury worse. Personally I'd let him go 2 defensive series or 20 plays tops. He needs reps, it helps the team gell in a game enviroment. It isn't likely he hurts himself worse in just a few plays against GA State.

The combination of this team's emotional dependency on the well being of Lathers and his medical history has me very nervous. I mean, what if he suffers something terrible in FL game? I think this team is better prepared than last year and what happened with Hunter, but I'm just not absolutely certain they would take something happening to him, strap up and move on without some kind of mental/emotional lapse. Somebody tell me I'm wrong. Please.

Well if the second half of Friday's game is any indication, the Vols can overcome his absence on the field. I think we are a better team with him on the field but Coach Sal had us playing some pretty good D in the second half, with Lathers on the side line. I hope he can play through being hurt and make it all season. He is a pleasure to watch and his onfield leadership is obvious. I don't think he has to play too many snaps Saturday for Dooley to make his point about the mentality of this year's D. They are gonna affect a lot of offenses this year. GO VOLS!
