Looking deeper at Jones

  • I took a look at Butch Jones wins and losses over the last three years and recruiting.

The wins and losses I found interesting. His first year he didn't get blown out per say, but the losses were average around the 10 to 15 point range.

By year two, that had stopped. The biggest blowout he had during that time period was Tennessee. But every other game his teams lost by three to seven points. I saw more three point losses than seven's though. He may have lost but he kept those games dang tight. Here's another interesting tidbit. His team lost to Louisville in overtime this year 34-31. Three points. That's how close his team came to going to a BCS bowl and Charlie Strong being yesterday's news.

As far as recruiting. His teams have been consistently in the 50s the last three years. But let's compare to that to recruiting guru Strong. Strong pulled in a rank of 35 his first year. Then Louisville was 51 the next year and Cincinatti was at 55. Louisville is in the 90s right now and Cincy lies in the 50s. I know Louisville still has some recruits it can pick up but I just don't see it jumping into top 10 out of nowhere. Possibly another class in the 50s.

I'm not saying he's better than Strong at recruiting, but it looks fairly comparable when looking at schools in the same conference. The closeness of the games though is what impresses me. The guy can coach.

Thanks for this analysis. This is a great hire. The only folks that don't think so are those that ignore wins/losses, championships, and all other facts. Some folks just want a "name."

  • I like Butch been following him since his days at central Michigan he is a good coach but is he a great coach? I don't know that yet. I think picking him to coach in the SEC right now might be to much for him.

  • Facts. Don't need 'em.

    Seriously, though, good stuff!

  • I wish we hired Jon gruden, but since we passed on him (hehe), I think butch jones is a good football coach. Reminds me of Bruce pearl.
