Loss of Maymon for Season Clearly Impacting Team Morale

  • After witnessing the highly ineffective performance UT put up for the home crowd in their conference opener I cannot begin to express how completely leaderless they appear at the moment. Much like the 2011 Colts without Manning, the heart and soul of the Vols BBall squad just isn't there and the performance is telling. I don't think you can really hold Martin personally responsible for the lack-luster play. I think the kids are giving it their all. I think the decision to slow down the games with defense is a fine attack plan, but without a clear leader there doesn't appear to be any unity or precision. I thought Golden would kind of take the reigns, but that's hard since I still don't think he's ever acclimated himself to be a true point guard. I guess what I'm saying is he can't really try to do something that he doesn't do naturally and be a vocal team leader at the same time.

In any case, I think the Volunteers are in limbo right now at the wrong time of the season and unless things change in a hurry I don't see a NCAA Tournament birth in the near future.

  • They have nobody with a killer instinct that could score in bunches or consistently

I'm starting to think McCrae is the man for putting points up, but it seems like the D is lax with him on the court. I'm not saying it's all him, but it's like he's doing something not in the game plan and everyone loses their pace on D.

  • martin is going to have to change his stall of playing...we have the players to beat anyone

i think martin should cut the reins loose on mccrae & richardson..play the players to the strength
i might be off ..but it seems like hes holding our best players back from the start

then when we fall way behind he turns them lose or am i wrong and it just looks this way?

  • agree we looked way better last year and dint make it..something has gone north in a hurry

martin being a player first i know he see what needs to be fixed and have someone to step up and take control even if its a freshman..long season but long ways to go to make a ncaa run

dont see it happen this year..next year will be the kick start for us and a team to deal with
every game..and its safe to say stokes will be here another year maybe 2..go vols

  • Lots of games left to play, and the SEC is pretty down this year, but, sad to say, we probably have little chance of making the tourney without Maymon. We dont have the offensive firepower, and now the defense is struggling as well. If i have a criticism of CM, it's that he seems obsessed with gritty, tough, defensive players, which might have served him well in the MVC, but isnt going to win a lot of games in the SEC. we need scorers. We REALLY need guys who can knock down open jump shots with consistency. last ime i checked, you win by outscoring the other team, and to do that, you need guys who can put the ball in the hoop.

I will say, Hubbs looks like the real deal as a scorer, so i really am looking forward to seeing him on the floor with Maymon and Stokes. Just a shame we are going to have to wait a year to see those guys on the court. Hope CM can keep it together this year and get some momentum going into what should be a return to the tourney for us next year..

i understand that sentiment, but i've been a UT hoops fan for so long it still pains me to see us suffer through mediocrity. I was a vols hoops fan before even UT football. I would play nerf hoop in my bed room as a kid with John Ward on the radio calling the games. Those are some of my favorite childhood memories, the Ernie and Bernie show, Reggie Johnson and Howard Wood, Dale Ellis..man, some great times.., and Ward's brilliant "BOTTOM!".. As a consequence, i will always love my basketvols!

I don't understand how this team, "has the talent to beat anyone." Who on this team is a 1st round pick? Who can shoot at an elite level? Who can create their own shot at an elite level?

I'm not bashing any of the players, maybe they will develop. But IMO, the optimism at the beginning of the season was that we would be a tough, physical, defensive minded team who beat teams with our bigs. Tough to do that when you lose one of your most dominant bigs.
