  • It's not about what you think.

  • My understanding is that it is more for upcoming schedule.

    Planned meeting for bowl preparations?
Idk seems like too good of timing.

    butler0320

  • Yes, bowl practices start Friday morning. Believe me, if he's going, we'll be over here giving you all kudos for making him one of the Top 5 paid coaches in the country, because he won't be cheap.

Thanks for info. Good luck to your cards no matter what happens. Enjoy watching your qb.

  • Reported by a father of one of the players that the meeting has been scheduled for a few days and it has to do with the schedules for the holidays and the Sugar Bowl. The kids got their Sugar Bowl gear today and were quite excited.

I'm just here to see what you guys think. Up until about 1/2 hour ago I thought Strong was gone, now I hear from good sources that it looks like he has had a change of heart (or maybe he was passed over, who knows).

I am of two minds, part of me wants to move on and part of me wants him to stay. I guess I can't lose that way, or win.

Do you (or any card fan who may be here) see this as Strong wanting interviewed as leverage for ab extension?

  • What is your take on the quality of a coach that Strong is? Your overall impressions?

    JeffB4UT

  • Same question for you as cardsfan, what are your overall impressions of Coach Strong?

    JeffB4UT

  • 1) He has had an extension on his desk for a while and has consistently said that he would deal with it after the season. So that leaves the question is he angling for a major raise. He makes 2.3 now which is top 20 or close. He may have been but Jurich is hot so probably not a good time to ask for one.

    2) Impressions. In all honesty I have been very disappointed. I said in year one that he would have some issues and hopefully could work himself into the HC job. Clock management has been poor, we lost two games last year because of motivation and this year our special teams are horrendous. We don't have a special teams coach but we have 3 guys coaching the receivers. We had a very bad OC in the first year who was canned 4-5 games into last year. Watson is the OC now and his play calling can leave you bewildered. A lot of east-west on 3rd and short.

Recruiting? Forget about it, the best, but it looks like his main man Clint Hurtt will get 5 years show cause for his part in the Miami fiasco.

LOL I would take Petrino back in a heartbeat just to see what he could do with Bridgewater and 4 receivers that look like NFL material. We wouldn't have to worry about the D then.

    Good luck to all.

  • He has an excellent recruiting ability. If comparing him to Petrino from an x's and o's standpoint, not even close. We became spoiled here with Petrino and his attention to detail. Too many times we've had to call timeout because we didn't get a play in, or we run a very obvious single back formation right up the middle knowing full well it's going to be stuffed for two yard loss. He seems like a genuinely good person in a bad position. We all know how long he wanted to be a SEC coach and got passed over, and I guess we kind of grew attached because we're the program no one ever wants to stay at for a long time. We thought we had found a coach that could relate to our fanbase....

Ask me about him today. He's lying, poorly. I bet he has had talks with UT, and he's interested. But he's struggling to find a reason to blame UofL so he can have an excuse to break up with us. So he attacks the fan base and our dedication in a 7 minute tirade right after commenting that he isn't going to talk about rumors. Compared us to our arch-enemy from Lexington, said we weren't up to their level. It hurts as a fan, and some of it isn't without merit, but if you're the coach, there are other ways to get our attention.

This program played in a minor league baseball stadium and averaged 30,000 fans just 15 years ago. We now average 50,000 fans, sell 40,000 season tickets, and take 25,000 to BCS bowl games. Are we UT, no! But we are UofL, we have been to two BCS bowls, and we will be to more BCS bowls. If he doesn't want to be here, then we don't really want him to be here. We've offered to pay him as much as anyone else, and having the most profitable athletics department in the nation, on top of now making an extra $18 million per year in the ACC vs. Big East, will allow us to pay him if that's what he wants. But we don't know if that is what he wants.

Good luck to you all in your search.

    cardsfan44

  • I know it's the Big East but got to be happy with BCS bowl bid and 10-2 although he really could have been unbeaten I guess. Is his main guy that you refer to his DC?

Yeah I thought it odd to point those things out in the presser. Some game management stuff sounds like what we have been a part of recently. I guess what has me excited is recruiting. I think he could do really well in the SEC at a place like Tennesse. With the right staff that could translate into us getting back to relevance. Good luck to you guys as well!

I have always been skeptical of Charlie Strong. After reading your post and Farmer's, I am horrified.

    DaddyHink

  • No, Vance Bedford is the DC and that's another issue. They have talent but have played very uninspired. They do lack a leader though as we play a lot of sophs and frosh. We were around 20th ranked last year and maybe 104 this year.

Clint Hurtt is the guy I was talking about. DL coach. Assoc HC and Recruiting Coordinator. The guy gets it done.

That's right. I went blank on Bedford. How much influence on defense does Coach Strong have!! Ranked 104?? Bring him to us! Big improvement for our defense LOL

    JeffB4UT

  • LOL. I am not sure of his involvement on the day-to-day but he is very active at any of the open practices. As far as game management he seems to leave everything to his staff.

  • U OF L fan here. Strong is a good coach. Not a great coach, IMO. I think Petrino is quite a bit better.

Also, strong is terrible with the media and in his postgame show. I mean like God awful terrible. Not sure how that will play at UT. The question will be asked "Coach, where were the defensive breakdowns on that TD drive in the fourth quarter?" Answer: "you know we just didn't tackle. You gotta go make a play." Awkward pause.
...and that's literally the whole answer.

Of course, if he wins big, no one will care. Ive been to one UT game...the Wyoming game right after Fulmer was fired. Its an awesome gameday experience.

Would certainly be different than Dooley. The man couldnt coach but he was great to listen to. I think I would take wins and high character over the ability to win a press conference.
