MSU Spartan here... I come in peace...

  • Hi Vols,

DoubleSpartan here, and I come in peace to learn more about you guys and experience college football Vol Style!!

I am in exile down here in the South away from my Spartans, so a buddy and I are heading to the Tennessee-Florida game this weekend to get our college football fix. We plan on coming down early to enjoy everything UT has to offer and enjoy the tailgating scene. Neither of us have ever been there so we need some advice...

    1. What is the gameday scene like? Is there a lot of tailgating going on (I would certainly hope so)? What should we expect?
    2. Where should we park? What area would give us the best access to the stadium and the tailgating?
    3. What do we need to see and do to get the full UT Football experience?
    4. What time should we get down there? When will the parking lots be open for people? When will the party start?
    5. Are food and adult beverages easily accessible? What should we plan on just bringing with us? Do the cops allow you to have open containers anywhere you want?
    6. How do you think you will do this weekend? Rest of the season? Do you think Derek Dooley is the right guy for the job? Can he get it done in the always very tough SEC?

A couple of things: Thanks for DeAnthony Arnett. He seems like a great kid and a great talent, so we thank you for treating him well for the year he was at UT!
Also, we apologize for beating you in the 2010 Elite Eight. When Tom Izzo smells a Final Four, he really cannot be stopped. King1

Go GREEN! sparty GO VOLS! F*CK LANE KIFFIN (he's a giant douche-bag and totally left you guys hanging...)

Also, some Spartan hotties for your enjoyment.

  • The 247 Spartans might be my favorite non-Vol fanbase. You guys are awesome.

Campus will be crazy, especially with us being ranked and ESPN in town. Not sure about parking (I've never had to worry about it) but I know people who are planning on getting to campus at 8 AM. Be here early. Lots of tailgating. Bring a solo cup.

  • Vol walk- Calhouns by the river- wear orange and don't park at Childrens Hospital

  • Plenty of places to drink on Cumberland (strip)- maybe a mile from Neyland

  • There is a big tailgating lot at James Agee and Clinch (James Agee is called Philip Fulmer Way south of Cumberland Ave) where people will start to get there around 6:00 am. The tailgaters along the Agee side of the lot and at the back of the lot are the hard core people. There is plenty of parking north of Cumberland Ave. As was mentioned earlier, you can also to the side of campus near the river and find a lot to do there. Calhoun's will be out of control and the Vol Navy docks very near there.

I hope you have a lot of fun. Tell Arnett that Da'Rick has been kicked off the team so he can come back now.

  • First, let me thank you for sharing sparsely dressed Spartans with us. Now on to the rest of the regularly scheduled programming.

Whether you spend any time there or not, Calhoun's and the Vol Navy is worth seeing. This is one of only two waterfront college stadiums where people "tailgate" on the water in the country. Parking North of Cumberland (Neyland is south of Cumberland) is widely available but be careful to park where you have the best chance to not get blocked...no matter how friendly the resident ("I live here - I'll make sure you aren't blocked!") seems, words are just words.

Bring a cup and don't show out and the cops will leave you alone. Carry a beer can and be a target. Throw empty bottles at parked cars and dumpsters and become an elite SEC quarterback.

The strip - Cumberland Ave east of campus - under 40 crowd

Other places to people watch are Old City and Market Square - over 40 crowd (us old fogeys). You can park many places and city shuttles run regularly back and forth to these areas. You can return on any of the buses, not "the one I came on".

Welcome to Knoxville, you will never forget this weekend.

Dooley is not 100% the guy for the job, not close yet. If we lose this week and rush for under 75 yards there is a problem. We need a coach who is committed to being a physical team and running the ball, we have yet to prove so...

And MSU fan you get a huge Fail for wearing Green especially if you wear that garbage into the game.

  • Use a solo cup, go down to the river and make friends, its pretty easy to do and find people to hang out with. Since you aren't a big donor you won't be able to park down there, but its worth seeing. The Vol Navy is a lot of fun if you can find yourself invited on a boat.

Honestly, if you all came to MSU wearing your Tennessee Orange, I would encourage it, welcome you to East Lansing, and likely hand you a beer to show some hospitality. If you are a Spartan or a Vol, you should only wear the colors of a Spartan or a Vol.

For me to wear anything but green would be me being untrue to myself. No disrespect to Tennessee, I just will support my school, but happily root for the Vols to kick some Gator butt at the game. And I won't just wear orange, act like a BIG fan, and lie to you the whole time (won't disrespect you guys that way either...)

Sparty On!! My daughter is a sophomore there, so welcome! As for UT, get ready is all i gots to say.. Have dinner at Calhoun's friday night if you can get in. Place will be crazy. Hit the strip (Cumberland Ave.) on saturday afternoon, then stroll down and take in the vol navy and the tail gating. Head over to the stadium for the Vol Walk, then enjoy the game!! 108,000 of your closest friends, IF you wear orange. I understand you want to represent Sparty, but I'd pick up an orange jersey at the bookstore and wear it for the game. Just some friendly advice from a vol fan stuck up in Michigan. I'll be coming down to Knoxville for the game this weekend myself. Hope Sparty beats the domers and UM loses to whoever they are playing!! GBO!!

Always happy to brag about our hotties!! babybabytongue (and know its an easy way to make new friends...)

I should also mention that we are both in our mid-to-late 20s. And my friend is a Michigan fan... I know I am a bad person for even associating with him, but I can honestly say it is his one non-redeeming quality... Anyways, where should we go for some UT co-eds? banana

  • You might get razzed abit for wearing ur colors but people will still treat you right. We are mostly a friendly bunch

I disagree about Old City being for the over 40 crowd. Lots of drinking-aged students are migrating over there for the bar scene. The Strip, sadly, can get rough in the wee hours of the morning and the bar scene isn't much to brag about, although you may have some luck at Tin Roof.

Oh I fully expect (and hope) for some razzing. I figure it's a great conversation starter, and you all seem like friendly people so it should be good times. I mean it's not like I am wearing a Florida or Georgia or any other SEC foe. Hating me would be like hating Switzerland... You just have no good reason to hate us...

  • I disagree with the Old City statement as well. I'm mid to late 20s UT graduate and love the Old City and Market Square: Downtown Grill & Brewery, Hannah's, Preservation Pub, and good eats as well (Tomato Head, Cafe 4, others).

The strip can be good for pre-game and post game: Cool Beans, Roaming Gnome, Tin Roof, Half Barrel.

As far as late night eats, get a Rooster at the Shell on the strip, or head over to Gus' Good Times Deli if it still exists.

  • So what are the great game day traditions? What are some things that make a game day at UT special and unique from anywhere else? Stuff involving the football team? The band? The cheerleaders? The fans?
