Maggitt

  • I just want to make most of you aware that if Maggitt really has a case of turf toe (like Dooley said) and he really sat out most of the week of practice this week, it is very unlikely he'll play against Florida. And if he does play, he'd be very limited and likely to re-injure it.

This seems to be overlooked a bit at this point by the fan base. Turf toe is one of the worst injuries for a football player to have.

  • There is absolutely no way Maggitt doesn't play this week. I don't care if he had a broken leg, he wad committed to UF his senior year and snubbed them for us. I bet he has a ton of family coming up and we are playing on gameday. He will play

He might play. But he'll be limited...quite limited.

WebMD states that after the initial injury, it takes 2-3 weeks to get better. I'm going to bet he has been under the R.I.C.E. treatment soon after the conclusion of the NC State game and the training staff is all over this. The fact that he was seen on campus with a boot exemplifies the significant treatment and rehab he is undergoing. I'm with Drizzle on this one - no way he stays out of this game!

Turf Toe: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

WebMD describes what turf toe is, what causes turf toe, and how it's treated.

WebMD can say whatever it wants. I've treated this plenty. 2 weeks out is fine for a normal person with a desk job. Not an elite athlete who does what Maggitt does.

He might play...but don't expect anything close to what he was in the NC ST game if he does.

  • Dooley said it was "like turf toe" so it doesn't make too much sense to speculate the worst.

You're probably right. Ryan was confirming that Dooley said it was turf toe though, and that's what I was going with.

  • Isn't it kinda silly to assume every turf toe is the same? Every sprain is different.

From a medical standpoint? No. Turf toe is what it is and when you see the people out for months with it, it's because they keep re-aggravating it.

I've seen guys play a full season with it.

Not every case is the same.

Not at 100%, you haven't. Which I stated. He could play, but limited. And the more he plays on it, the less likely he'll be to get to 100% this season.

And Wes, not trying to bust your balls or anything, but how many cases have you treated? I'm somewhere between 50 and 100, I'd guess.

At the risk of sounding ignorant,.is turf toe basically a sprain?

    wataugavol

  • You can't make an absolute statement like that and claim that it is the case 100% of the time... That's like saying there has never been an instance of an injury "like turf toe" that hasn't held a guy back.

Yes. It's a sprain of the joint between a toe and the foot. 95% of the time, it's the big toe involved. It disallows you from flexing your toe at that joint without severe pain, and because of the location of the joint, it is extremely difficult to tape or brace in a way that protects the joint but also allows reasonable motion.

Just a really sucky injury for an athlete.

Again, if it isn't turf toe, then my points are moot. I am going off what Ryan said Dooley said.

Yeah, it sucks. It's painful. Every step hurts, even with a brace. It expedited the end of Deion Sanders' career. Same for Calvin Hill and Jack Lambert in the old days.

If it's a bad one, it's bad. Takes forever to heal. But I've seen Maggitt walking around, and he's not walking too gingerly or wincing, and he's doing some stuff on the side in practice. I don't think it's a severe case. But I'm not the expert here, obviously.

If i am not mistaken, turf toe was one of many factors that put Shuler out of the league

This makes it sound like it isn't even turf toe. If it was, he wouldn't be cleared to do any of that the first week.

So maybe its one of the smaller toes or is a toe sprain, which is much less of an issue.

What also makes it sound like it is not turf toe is that Dooley called it a "turf toe kind of deal" but good work with the doomsday proclamations.
