Meet the newest Chicago Cub...

Ryan - How about Shelby Miller? Cards rotation next year will be fantastic. I saw that they through Kyle Lohse a qualifying offer but arent going hard after him. Pretty nice when you can let Lohse walk based on the young guys coming in. I like Joe Kelly a lot too. Rosenfield was consistently hitting 99/100 in the playoffs and they all got valuable experience. I cannot wait to crush the Cubs again next year.

    Go Cardinals

It's been a foregone conclusion for a couple of months that Lohse was gone. As soon as the Cards gave Jake Westbrook a one-year extension back during the season, that was it for Lohse. The qualifying offer just ensures they'll receive draft-pick compensation for losing him via free agency.

Like you, I'm really excited about the young arms the Cards have coming up. It's been awhile since they had this much talent coming up through their system around the same time.

    Ryan Callahan

  • So they offered him 13.3M which was the top 100 average or something like that. He'll reject it and the Cardinals will get a compensation pick which as i understood it was in the compensation round which is between rounds 1 and 2, Is that new with the new CBA?

I'm hard pressed to remember the last time I was excited about the amount of talent coming in.

No, it's been that way for years. In fact, I thought the compensation had changed with the new CBA. I can't remember how it works now.

Actually, the way Hallowed Hill stated it is correct. They didn't just have to offer Lohse arbitration, they had to offer him a much higher "qualifying offer". An offer that makes it much more likely a player will occasionally take the one year deal. It's considered a much higher risk.

The compensation has changed a bit but I am too lazy to go find what it is.

This was exactly what I was saying. I remember exactly how the old system worked, and I understood the deal with qualifying offers.

I think I was mistaking compensation for all players, which hasn't changed much, with compensation for players acquired midseason. Now, if you trade for someone near the deadline, you can't get a high draft pick as compensation for losing that player in free agency.

Okay. I misunderstood what you were saying. 10am games (mountain time) are way too early for a Saturday and I'm not mentally functioning yet.
