Michigan Fans at Work

  • I work with a few Michigan fans here at work. They're betting me a steak dinner at an expensive Omaha steakhouse that Tennessee doesn't finish within 2 wins of Michigan. I'm very tempted to take the bet. Anyone know much about Michigan this year? I know they were pretty good last year, but I find it hard to believe their depth would be where they want it, with only being in year 2 of rebuilding from the RichRod debacle. Also, their schedule is no cakewalk this year with a neutral site game vs. Bama and going to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State and an improved Purdue team. They also play Michigan State who should be pretty good. Should I take the bet?

The place they're talking about dinner at is usually about 50 bucks a pop and I would buy them both dinner or they would buy me and my wife dinner.

  • There's probably about a 2 win difference in difficulty between the SEC and Big Ten, so that's really like saying we'll have the same kind of year. That's at least how I look at it. I think they have a pretty easy schedule too. I see them at 10-2. I actually think we'll end up 8-4, so I guess I'd take the bet for regular season.

  • Yeah, should've clarified, but the bet is not counting bowl games.

  • How I'd break it down:
Michigan loses to Alabama, and 2 out of Notre Dame, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Ohio State. They'll have a big target on their back after the year they had last year.
Final Record 9-3 (10-2 at best)

Tennessee beats Georgia State, Akron, Troy, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky convincingly. That means they need to beat 2 or 3 out of NC State, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Missouri for a 7-5 or 8-4 record. All this while flying under the radar, IMO.

    I'd take the bet.

  • Interesting bet. Michigan has some tough games this year. I'd list those as Bama, ND, Mich.St, and tOSU. I think Iowa and Nebraska @ Lincoln could also be tough for Michigan. Assuming Michigan splits the games I mentioned and wins the rest, that puts them at 9-3. So as I understand your bet, if UT goes 7-5, you would win the bet.

I like UT's chances to go 7-5 at the least. I would probably take the bet, but I get silly over the chance at free steak. biggrin

Yeah, I love some steak, and it's one of the few things they do right out here in the midwest. I just wanted to make sure no one thought Michigan was gonna be winning 11 games before I took the bet lol.

Do not take the bet!! They will win all games including the big 10 championship game except for the Alabama game. Easy schedule

I seriously doubt that ND, tOSU and Mich. St. will be easy games. I think UM could very easily lose each of those. I also think Nebraska has a great shot at beating them in Lincoln. I don't see how their schedule is 3 wins easier than ours, at all.

+1 Good breakdown (especially the "flying under the radar" note)

Take the bet. I mean its just money! lol But seriously I would take the bet. I believe UT will go 8-4 at least so you should win.

  • Michigan State is winning the Big 10 this year. They are really good. Much better than Michigan.

  • I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul cause I think I'm better than you...fire on the mountain run boys run

If the Vols take care of business and are anywhere near our expectations we have 8 wins...can Michigan win 11?

  • Take the bet for one key reason: the Wolverines have a history of over promising and under delivering ever since the Appy St loss.

Take the bet and give the Big Ten another SEC black eye. (This time in your office.)

  • Update: I have taken the bet. These guys - as michigan fans are prone to do - are talking so much junk now. I really hope that Tennessee just outright wins more games than them so they'll have nothing to say! Geez, are all Big 10 fans this outrageously cocky? They seem to forget that the B1G doesn't win anything!

    dddon

  • I agree with you taking the bet. However, I think the outcome will be based less on how Michigan under-performs and more on how well we perform. My girlfriend is a Michigan grad, so we watch a lot of UT football and a lot of UM football (I've been to the big house plenty of times, and Neyland is by far more impressive). But I think the one thing people shouldn't overlook is what's happening to the UM program because of Rich Rod's time there. The players he brought to that program, while I know don't fit Brady Hoke's scheme very well, are all stellar athletes and if the coaching staff can find the right way to utilize them, as they did last year, then I think their program has a lot more credibility behind their arrogance than most think.

Still, like I said, you've got a good bet going because they seem to expect little from the Vols, which I think are ready to do great things this year! GBO!

How many games will they be favored this year vs UT? UT was 5-7 last year too.........8 wins is a good leap in the toughest by far conference in the nation.....especially when 3 of our 4 games might be top 10 teams and the other is a preseason top 25 team.

  • Nick Saban went 6-6 in his first year so don't go too crazy here - I would probably make 2 bets with your friend: 1. bet him that we will be within 2 wins but that if we are within 3 wins the bet is a push 2) that in 2014 we will be within 1 win of Mich and make some side action with him for an extra $100 if we beat Bama and they lose to Ohio State in 2014
