Momentum Swing in recruiting for UT?

  • With alot of positive news about recruits making additional visits to UT, and others adding UT to their list of visits, does it appear CBJ and staff are penetrating the "visible forcefield" that has blocked UT in the past several years from landing some top recruits?

  • My gut tells me our class will finish in the top 15-20 range this year, with 7+ wins next year and CBJ drive to succeed and recruit, we could definitely finish in the top ten recruiting next year, if we can get the top in-state talent to commit to UT.

Interesting that I asked you, in another thread, if you were getting the feeling that this staff is making progress in the background and will close strong. I wasn't sure about these guys to begin with but they may turn out OK. As I said in the other thread...I hope I'm not whistling through the graveyard.

  • My thought for this thread was due to the news of recruits deciding to make an additional visit(s) to UT. There is obviously "0" promises that any of them sign, but do we find it just coincidental, or ironic, or fate dealing it's hand? I know, I know, only way to know is when pen hits paper, but all of the sudden, recruits appear to be taking a much bigger look at the potential of greatness returning to Rocky Top. Is it just the same old 'whirlwind" of indecision, or are we making definite positive progress with new staff?

I still think there's time for the new staff to salvage this class and maybe land a couple big time players. Dooley had trouble winning games obviously, but the 3 classes he signed were not that bad and I feel that coach Jones has enough talent to steal a few wins next year.

I love your optimism, but to Ryan's point I think with any staff change combined with the time of the year, new names will always pop up. Committed kids have second thoughts, the staff brings in some new names, and kids interested in UT but scared by CDDs hot seat start making visits; I don't think it is indicative of anything special the staff is doing or predictive in terms of how we finish this year.

Dooley did land some good talent no doubt. I also have confidence a solid class will be at UT this season. But again.....Does there appear to be alot more consideration being given to UT than has been the past few seasons? Key word is "appear". Or is the buzz surrounding our new staff sparking more interest than we have seen in recent years? My question isn't wether we will land the big time recruits all of the sudden, and have a top 10 recruiting season, but merely, is CBJ & Co. Getting the attention, and garnering recruits to take a longer look at UT? Just using the announcements of more big time recruits deciding to make additional visits, and some deciding to make visits that were not with the previous staff.

I can't read Ryan's post lol.....I am in no way suggesting CBJ and staff are doing anything "special" that is making a difference, nor am I saying they aren't. Just asking if everyone thinks this buzz is due to the staff change, or "Is it just the same old 'whirlwind" of indecision"? I know things have changed over the years with the way kids think, and how much popularity sways their decisions everytime the winds change direction. In my baseball days, I would go over every offer with my parents and coach. I would immediately rule out the ones I had no desire to entertain. The visits I made were to the teams I felt like had the most to offer me as a player, and a student. I also wanted my family to be able to take part in home games as much as possible. When I made my choice, I never looked back. Of course coming from a home where you were taught " a committment is a committment", I didn't entertain changing unless the offering school made changes that didn't fit for me. So being on the outside looking in, I am looking more for ideas, than how we'll end up the recruiting season this year. Sorry if my original question is confusiing or hard to understand....

Not saying its impossible, but I have a hard time seeing our 2013 class even finishing in the top 25. To get to top 15-20, we'd need at least 2-3 of Lawson, Bell, North, Green, or Collins, and right now we're not the favorites for any of them. Anything can still happen, but I've sort of resigned to the fact that this class will probably be short on elite players and won't be ranked very high. The elite guys are giving him consideration because it's intriguing, but Butch just hasn't had enough time and doesn't have the "wow" factor that will make those guys pick UT in the end. There will still be some solid contributors in this class, though, so it's nothing to be upset about.

Now the 2014 class I'm right with you. Butch wins 7+ and shows recruits he is legit, then that class will be really solid, and top 10 is not a stretch.

Not sure what you mean by "penetrating the visible forcefield" but I think the new staff has it's own kind of players in mind and are showing more interest in recruits the previous staff didn't. The fact that they won't have to worry about Dooleys future and knowing what kind of offense/defense Jones will run also attracts new interest.

"visible forcefield" : Simply meaning with the coaching issues (kiffin, dooley) and the losing seasons etc..that have kept recruits away. Kooper said "the new staff has it's own kind of players in mind and are showing more interest in recruits the previous staff didn't. • Ramsey, Lawson, and DG get us to seccg. Will it happen? Meh

North would make us more fun to watch but only the 49ers could stop our running game
