Moral Victories and hangover drive ramble

  • I don't believe in moral victories. Never have and never will. I like sports because wins and loses give us an objective measuring stick. Nobody gets paid for almost doing well.

That said, improvement is evident. The UGA loss is worth it if we show up and beat MSU. There was an outstanding comeback in the 2nd quarter that can not be denied and was awesome to watch.

We still didn't play four quarters though.....we did switch from taking the fourth quarter off to taking the first quarter off.

I watched the highlights on YouTube just now. Man, the running game is clearly better. The o line opened up some 90's holes on a great defense. Now the o line just needs to prove that they can do it consistently. MSU is the marker.

Neal has elite speed. Until we have someone else with similar speed, he is our man. I like Lane but be doesn't have size or speed.

Our d is so much worse than I expected. I knew the conversion would cause some pain but I actually think it is the pure lack of speed that is killing us more than the scheme.

Let's see what happens at MSU. In my mind, that game defines our season. It is a game that we can win and it would be a good SEC win on the road. We need this next one.

  • I don't think I've seen anyone claim this as a "moral victory." And I disagree that the team "took the first quarter off." Fact is, we were playing a really good team, on both sides of the ball, and they punched us hard. The critical takeaway is how our team progressed through the game. Last year's team would have been run out of the building. Even based on our performance in our first 4 games, I thought we would lose by more than 2 TDs. That we did not gives me hope for the rest of the way.

Hope you aren't hung over too badly! biggrin

  • I didn't say people have called it a moral victory....just giving my opinion on he concept of moral victories.

Agreed on the bounce back last night. World of difference against a very good team on the road.

I should have actually said we took off he first half of the the first and third quarters.....and I don't mean that from an effort perspective.....just didn't execute as well as we did at other times on D during those periods.

Effort is not an issue with this team....which is a step in the right direction.

Can we change the schedule and play MSU next week? I want to see more....and finally be able to celebrate a good win.

  • I'm hoping that the bye week will give us a chance to really address our defensive issues. I know what you mean though, I agree with Wes's comment elsewhere that tonight's UT team probably beats MSU.

THIS. I want this team plus the improvements from the open week at Starkville.

  • The only thing that I worry about with this MSU game is the fact that UT historically doesnt do well after an off week. Seems like it takes them a half to get warmed up. Hopefully that wont happen. GO VOLS!!!
