More Gruden talk on Washington Redskins Radio

  • The only reason I'm trying to stay away from believing all this Gruden stuff is so I will be able to read TOS MELTDOWN when Gruden is not our coach.. People over there will be going CRAZY

Babyvol on TOS is also saying he's hearing its close to getting done with Gruden.

After the last two coaching searches, I'm not going to rely too much on what any poster states as fact, regardless of how reputable they might be. There have been several times going back to the Fulmer dismissal where what reliable posters claimed to be fact was nothing even remotely close to the truth, but a lot of people fell for it. More recently, the Randy Shannon rumors from last off-season fooled a lot of people, to the extent that the Sunseri hiring was viewed as a step down by many (ironically with the benefit of hindsight they were pretty spot on in that assessment).

That being said, I have a growing suspicion that we are not going to hear anything official regarding the coaching situation until after the Kentucky game, and that the firing/hiring announcements will either occur in rapid fire succession or 1-2 days apart at most.

  • Scary how similar this Gruden talk is to the Shannon as DC talk. Rumor feeds rumor. People believe what they want to believe.

  • I really want to believe we will get Gruden.......but the logical part of my brain expects us to end up with another Tier 2 or 3 coach like we did with Dooley. I sure as heck hope that is wrong, but after our luck the past 7+ years, it is hard for me to be optimistic.

I keep coming back to, why would Gruden pick UT when he will have a lot of NFL options at the end of the year (Chargers, Eagles, Panthers just to name a few)?

I am so ready for this season to just be over with. I am beaten down and completely burned out on rooting for this team at this point. First time ever.

Just to add to all the mayhem, supposedly, a Jacksonville radio host stated on air today that Dave Hart is a BIG fan of Al Golden. Likes his recruiting abilities and his knowledge of the game. Also, thinks Hart may throw a Hail Mary up to Stoops because it is believed that Stoops is feeling under appreciated in Norman and may be looking for a place to reviltalize his coaching legacy. (Maybe Hart should be our coach. Apparently he's actually willing to throw Hail Mary's up for the win) The radio host also said that Hart is a big believer in Charlie Strong.

Disclaimer: I didn't hear this broadcast for myself but I've read about it a few different places. I have no idea how this guy allegedly has any knowledge of our program whatsoever. However, I would welcome any of these 3 coaches with open arms. Stoops, Strong and Golden would be my personal order.

Al Golden can keep himself in Miami. His football coaching style is a mirror image of what we currently have.

WE DO NOT WANT AL GOLDEN IN KNOXVILLE.

Bingo. There was not even an ounce of truth to the Shannon rumors.

Assuming this is true (which is anything but certain), that would be the closest thing to a definitive report yet on this situation. That being said, NFL "insiders" have been wrong before (sometimes embarrassingly so), and "college position" is a vague enough statement that it's hard to make the logical leap from rumor to fact on this one.

This isn't insider information. These people work with the Redskins on a daily basis and put themselves on record. On Washington Redskins Radio it was talked about. Gruden has spoken to Raheem Morris about a college position. Was the conversation ONLY about a college position? That is up for discussion. The bottom line is Gruden spoke to him about a college coaching gig. That is all.

Agreed man. The more I hear about him the more he reminds me of DD, great builder and recruiter who hasnt out coached anybody. I'd rather keep what we got than Golden.

I said it previously and I will say it again - these are not 'sources.' 'Sources,' by definition, are people who remain unnamed and offer up information that would otherwise stay behind closed doors. The Washington Redskins Radio station already confirmed the talks have happened (it would be the same as if Wes or Ryan reported it) . Please do not confuse these conversations with me claiming Gruden is the next coach at Tennessee. I don't think anything is made official or announced until after the UK game (unless we lose to Vandy which very well may happen).

I dont think we end up with a tier 2 or 3 coach. I just dont think Hart will do that. I think he realizes the importance of this hire and knows that we have to get a big name, top flight guy that's going to win.

As for why Gruden would pick UT over the NFL....personal preference? There are multiple college coaches who turn down NFL offers every year. How many times has Bob Stoops turned down NFL coaching gigs, or at least been mentioned as someone that an NFL team would like to talk to. Seems like every year after the season he removes himself from consideration immediately. With the way big time college coaches are being paid at top programs now anyway, i'm sure some people question why make the jump to the NFL where you have to deal with ego's of professional players, where you dont have the say in personnel moves, and other things like that. Lastly, I think some coaches generally like the idea of coaching and teaching college age kids over adults. just my $.02

There was no "supposedly" in my original post because if there was, that would mean I didn't hear it myself. "Supposedly" is why rumors get started. The Gruden/Raheem conversation 100% happened, but to what extent is unknown. This was on the Washington Redskins radio from those who work directly with the team. Again, the only reason I posted is because a "college position" was discussed, which I believe makes it relevant to Vol fans. Will keep you all updated with any other Redskins/Vols news.

Ummm............ Ok. I used "supposedly" because I in fact did not hear it for myself. But that doesn't mean it's just a rumor. It's not like the radio host, the people I heard it from, or myself is claiming anything definitive. The radio guy simply claimed to have some knowledge on our situation and was throwing out some tid bits. And honestly, no one bit of it seems so far fetched that it's not true. Basically the guy just said that Hart is a fan of Strong, Golden and may throw a Hail Mary up to Stoops. Nothing ground-breaking or earth-shattering, just sharing what some radio personality is throwing out there.

  • Just my opinion, but I don't believe there are as many NFL teams out there seeking Gruden as a coach we some might believe. The man was fired from his last NFL job and his record is hardly over .500. I think most teams will find more suitable replacements. The man has not coached in five years...why would any team try to rebuild their foundation on that? Maybe at best, the most desperate team in the league, which ironically, is the Cleveland Browns.

Above .500 in the NFL is good, just because he didn't have long term sucsess doesn't mean it won't work somewhere else
