More Positive Side to UT Recruiting

  • I think everyone should remember how well Tennessee closes in the month of January. It has always had a tendency of getting in the picture with recruits, secure visits and lock them up. Heres some recruits we have gotten in the month of January

    2012:
    Bonner
Bourque (no longer with team but flipped from LSU)
    Patterson
    McCullers

    2011:
    Clear
    Marcus Jackson
    Lane
    Lanier
    Maggitt
    Moore
    Orta
    Tiny

    2010:
    Hunter
    Neal
    Rogers
    Sapp
    Rivera
    Stone
(many others who are not with the team due to extreme attrition)

Tennessee always does well in January and with the steam that Coach Jones is generating, have confidence that it will be the same this year.

Not to be so negative, but I can't help but think that none of those players that we closed on in January have ever helped us to win many ballgames. Closing in January or any other month is fine as long as the players are worth signing. Don't think that has been the case for 5 or 6 years now.

I think the important thing is to see the quality of these players that we signed in the month of january alone versus the quality of players for the rest of the year. Bonner is a starting talent. Patterson and McCullers started. Same with Jackson, Lane, Maggitt, Moore, Tiny, Hunter, Neal, Rogers, Rivera, Stone.

I think you should take those players away and look at our starting offense and defense, even more holes.

I believe the reason for late committing recruits would be because they are fully taking advantage of their Official Visit opportunities and I'm sure theres a million other reasons too? If I were in their shoes I would visit Hawaii 3 times at least? Lol

  • Well said John C and very true +1. The Volunteers have a tradition of usually finishing strong on the recruiting trail for as long as I can remember.

IT TAKES NO TALENT TO HUSTLE

We sure do need to close strong. We have 18 commits and its a real possiblity we lose 2 of those like Skipper and ? for one of many reasons like grades or recruiting over etc.

We can sign 28 IIRC (signed 22 last year so 3 backcounts) so that means we have 12 spots left and the 85 rule seems less of a worry for being able to sign 25+ now than a week ago and esp come Aug 2013.

The one thing you dont want to see is last min flips that we have not recruited and build a relationship in a process. Bourque, Bonner, Phillips are examples of why indecision/ hotsauce etc does not work out many times. The only problem with that is this staff only has about 5 weeks on the road to develop those relationships/evaluate etc. You could even say D Rogers/ Nance was an example of this. Others in 2010 were: Dave Clark was a risk academically...same with E Loften.....John Brown too. Dooley had less time and had to get bodies but this is something to watch for at least. I think Jones has just enough time + has Graham and others recruiters that have SEC/southern ties to our recruits

Op is dead on........we get them on campus we have a real shot.........$40+ million indoor training facility and Neyland is jaw droppping.

    Great point.

The Ed Orgeron book on recruiting (forget the name), made an interesting point about how difficult it is to really know a recruit when you are introduced to them this late in the process. Character, work ethic attitude, by this point most recruits know the script to follow, have refined answers for past mistakes, and you can't scout a random practice to see how hard they work.

I also think part of the reason we do well in January is recruits looking at the numbers game see UT as a place where they can come in and play quickly.
