Muschamp blames Urban Meyer's recruiting. Seriously?

  • Will Muschamp took a veiled shot at Urban Meyer's recruiting as a reason for the fact that Florida went 6-6 in the regular season last year. If I remember, Meyer's last few classes were all top 5. How badly do you think Dooley would have loved to have such "poor" talent as they have at Florida? While I would agree the jury is still out on Dooley, I am happy we don't have Muschamp as our coach. Going 7-6 last year with that talent had to be one of the worst coaching jobs in the nation.

I'm with you in that I am glad he is not our coach. Complete jerk and now no class. Just WOW! +1

  • does he still talk about himself in 3rd person?

  • Muschamp is the biggest mouth-breather in the SEC.

  • Incredible! I cannot believe the guy would be dumb enough to say something even close to this. More evidence the Muschamp is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

  • While I can agree that I am glad he is not our coach, I have to believe he's right. Talent evaluation means more than looking at a player's stars and the Urb's never seemed to get that. He made poor choices on players because they had the hype, but they for sure didn't develop many players over the course of the last few years. Why else did Urb leave Florida?? Did you really think it was health or family reasons??? He knew he had a train wreck coming!

Have to agree. He really couldn't do anything without Tebow. We'll see how he does at Ohio St. He doesn't have that easy recruiting base there. How many of those great recruits really developed under him. I know many people wont believe this but neither he nor coach K. in basketball have ever really developed lower end talent. The only players they put in the pro's could have made it there with my coaching ability.

  • Ohio and western PA actually produce pretty good football talent. Not quite at the Florida level, but not terribly far behind. Urban Meyer should land consistently good classes. Doesn't mean I like him, though. I would be quite fine with him struggling up there.

As to Muschamp, he's done a bad job to date He came to a loaded, preseason top 25 program and coached it to the worst season they have had since the eighties.

I agree the team was loaded, but just not with a pro-style offense type of talent. Seems to me they were just smaller across the board and wanted more "athletic" linemen as opposed to big beast type guys. There isn't much excuse for the defense though...he just needs to get the weed out of their hands and keep them from thugin' it up down there and he'll have an improved team.
I think this year they are ripe to pluck! Let's go get 'em Big Orange (in six more months). vols

  • I think the problem Muschamp faced last season was that he tried to fit the players to his system instead of fitting the system to the personnel at hand. The offense under Meyer was significantly different than what Muschamp runs, and as a result players best suited for Meyer's system had trouble with the new playbook. That being said, blaming Meyer for his own failings is a douchebag move.

Thats understandable to have your own style..but good coaches adapt to their personnel and build to get the talent needed to run their preferred system...as you said the styles were different..i think they banked on Weis being able to bring out the talent Driskell was supposed to have but it didnt pan out and he bolted for KU..That gamble of a hire came up snake eyes!

  • Some of you guys are clueless.

Urban Meyer is a fraud, and a star whore who destroyed his team by recruiting PRIMADONNA'S who cared more about making the NFL then they did winning games.

Perfect example of Meyer's star-whore ways....he recruits John Brantley to play qb. Why? Brantley isn't mobile and doesn't fit Florida's system....But he was rated 5 stars, so the star whore Meyer had to have him.

Florida had NO talent on offense last year except for Rainey & Demps (2 midget running backs that don't fit Muschamp's pro-style scheme) and so the offense sucked. Muschamp is a defense coach, and guess what? Florida's defense was better in 2011, than it was in 2010 under Meyer.

Oh and remember the great Urban Meyer only went 8-5 in 2010, even he couldn't coach up his overrated ego-maniacs anymore.

Florida had a bad season because they have no talent, you'd think Tennessee fans would understand that since you've been through the same thing the last 2 years...

  • They had talent just not the talent that fit their system. Comparing that situation to UT is laughable at best. I'm sure Dooley would've loved to have two midget running back hell even one the quality of Rainey or Demps.

  • I guess I didn't do a good job making my original point. I don't disagree that Florida's talent was not a good fit for Muschamp's system. Having said that, Florida had much more talent and speed than Tennessee - particularly on defense and special teams - and yet only won one more regular season game.

But the point is to blame Meyer - a guy who won two national championships in six years at Florida - is simply stupid for an unproven head coach who barely was bowl eligible and who was starting some players who wore national championship rings.

This excuse making sends a bad message to the fans, and more importantly, to the Florida team - most of whom were recruited by Meyer. I have to believe this didn't go down well in the locker room because he basically called them soft and underperforming in public. It was just a stupid thing to say and reminded me of when Dooley publicly criticized some of our players and I cringed. As we now know, that caused problems in the locker room.

I think that by taking a shot at Meyer, Muschamp has put more pressure on himself to succeed quickly. This will be especially true if Meyer succeeds quickly at Ohio State because you can bet comparisons will be made. Jeremy Foley has proven that he has no problems correcting his mistakes quickly.

It's old news now, but I'm convinced Meyer quit because of clinical depression. I'm not a psychologist and I don't have inside information, but he sure seemed to show the symptoms.
