My Resolve is Being Tested..

  • I have steadfastly posted that i cannot get behind considering Petrino.. Cheating on your wife, lying to your AD, quitting on your previous team (Falcons), just makes me ill. but we are staring down into the abyss at this point and i am beginning to lose some of that resolve. Petrino would certainly bring attention to the program. Whether that's good or bad, im not sure. But hiring some of these other names is just pointless to me. If you are going to swim with the sharks in the SEC, you better be a big bad great white, and I dont see a hire like that out there any more. Not jones, or Golden, etc.. so maybe Petrino is the guy at this point...? Anyone else feel it might be time to hold our nose for the next hire?

Just not ready to go there. IMO, Butch Davis is a better coach with less toxicity than Petrino. Butch Jones of Cincy has a comparable record to Strong and just turned down Colorado, maybe because he's hoping we'll come offering. He's not ideal, but to me he's far better than Petrino.

Greg Roman of the 49ers has told the Vols he's interested.

Even if Petrino hadn't ridden his motorcycle off the moral cliff, I would not want him for what he did to the Atlanta Falcons. Unforgivable.

Do we really want to have college football's version of Darth Vader prowling our sidelines? Would the mamas of 18 year old boys really want to trust this guy to run their sons' lives? Would any UT coed be truly safe ever again?

OK, I know, I went too far. But you get the idea.

  • I would take off the Orange. I don't say that flippantly.

Please explain or try to "sell me" on how Butch Jones is far better than Petrino. Sure Petrino has plenty of warts but the one wart he doesn't have is his ability to coach and recruit in the SEC. Are you willing to take a chance on Butch Jones being better than Dooley because morally you can't agree with what Petrino has done in his past?

I'm not in love with the idea but might as well swing for the fences. Rather than accept a ground rule double and hope that we can manufacture a run with a bunt and sacrifice fly.

I love the SEC but it isn't sacred ground. A good football coach from elsewhere can come to the SEC and win. See Spurrier, Meyer, Saban, Richt, Miles, etc.

Jones is clearly a good football coach. He is 50-27, with two conference championships in the last five years. He has beaten his rivals at every school he's coached.

We don't need to sell our souls to the devil. There are a lot of good coaches out there who aren't named Petrino.

  • this is why i am conflicted on Petrino when I was adamantly opposed to him before. We need an elite coach. Im not convined that Butch Jones is that. Has he been "successful"? a "winning" coach? Sure. But he has not DOMINATED his conference like Brian Kelly did when he was there and led Cincy to two consecutive BCS bowls and a 12-0 record is last year. If you really look into the details of Jones' wins and losses at UC, there are few, if any, impressive wins, and some fairly uninspiring losses, like the Toledo loss this year. He lost to 2 of the 3 ranked teams he played. It's not an inspiring record for me. Worse, i have no confidence, and he has no demonstrated history of being able to recruit in the south or at an elite level. COULD he be successful? Sure, but i have grave doubts, and we cant afford 3-4 more years of mediocrity. Which leads me back to someone like Petrino.. And I made all the same arguments against Petrino that are discussed above, but, dang..we need an elite winner, and Petrino can be that..

I dont know guys. Im struggling hard with this. and im getting depressed. My son is a freshman at UT and I was really looking forward to going down for games with my son and seeing a resurgence of UT football...this year was tough, and im not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel..

  • Let's try to explain this another way. General Petraeus had an affair that led to his dismissal from the CIA. By all accounts, he has been a model soldier and agency administrator. However, his actions put the security of the nation and the CIA at risk. Would you hire him again, under the premise that he won't do it again?

Why would we consider hiring a man who knowingly put the university's reputation and financial standing at risk, assuming that he won't do it again? Even if fans might consider it, a university administrator has to be much more conservative in the manner by which they conduct business and would most likely not even remotely consider it in the name of wins. Lord knows Jimmy Cheek wouldn't.

Thus, we are probably wasting time with this. Move along.
