My idea for the 3-4 starting depth chart

  • Here I got bored.

  • Cool way to see it.

I think you will see Randolph at Safety and Lanier at CB. Gordon will never be a starting CB. He is a perfect nickel playing close to the line of scrimmage. EG has issues in open space...he is quick and aggressive but not fast enough to be a S or CB. Watch out for Orta or B. Moore at S too. Sentimore will play a ton too but so will Walls.

  • I thought due to some injuries last year, Gordon started a game or two and played above and beyond expectations.... Maybe that was when he got the nickel position.

All I know for sure is the Vandy game and the one before it the 104.5(Nashville sports radio) guys were praising him for his play. Let's just say I'm excited to have a group of starters with 0 freshmen in it!!!! Finally.

Oh and we are actually really deep at dline so I expect to see a lot of rotation in the ends (maybe see couch at the NT some)

  • Will Randolph start instead of Brewer or Waggner? Or will Waggner move to corner... Wow we really do have depth once again. We have McNeil in training for safety as well.

Love the graphic Blaize - very impressive! Couldn't agree more, we are building depth. Can't forget Sentimore on the DL - he is going to be a player! +1

  • I think I agree on everything but the secondary and maybe McCullers. Hopefully Waggner will move back to CB, I think that position suits him better. I think to start the season Sentimore will be starting at one of the ends, with possibly Couch in the middle. I don't think McCullers will be in good enough shape to start from game 1, but by the end of the season he could be there.

    CB - Waggner, Lanier
    Safety - Randolph, Brewer

I know I am stating the obvious, but competition for playing time is going to make the Big Orange a force to be reckoned with once more!

Agreed, I'd like to see Waggner move back to corner. If I remember correctly he got three pick-six's and five picks overall at that position... Hopefully we'll see some more of that this season. biggrin

  • I agree with several other guys; the defense is much better with Waggner at corner. Lanier will probably play the other corner. Dooley praised him a lot because he is big, physical, and tackles well. Randolph will start at FS. Who knows about SS though. I think it's wide open.

The injury to Brewer is definitely going to make that a position to watch in Spring and Fall practices...

+1 I feel like this is likely. But I also think Coleman will push for some more playing time at corner after the experience he got last year and another offseason in the program.

Nice work Blaize, I hope you get bored more often! And I agree that it's very nice to have some options now that there's some depth.

And volfanky, I'm interested in seeing how Coleman develops through this spring and summer. That kid is super smart, and seemed to have a lot of potential at CB.

  • I think Prentice moves back to corner definitely...I also don't think 10 will be starting at corner. I would much rather see Gorden start than him. Niether can cover all that well, but at least EG has the speed to make a play or two. But frankly, the depth we got hopefully moves these two out of the starting roles...but I really like the fron 7 you put together here!

  • I agree with you CincyVol on your proposed starters. +1

  • Love the starting lineup diagram. Anything can happen between now and NC State, but my guess would be:

LB - just like you've got 'em.
DL - Couch, McCullers, Sentimore (but I wouldn't be surprised by Walls or Bohannon if those anyone is not ready on day 1)
    CB - Waggner, Lanier
S - Randolph, Brewer (this is me hoping that Brewer is fully healed and ready so we can work McNeil in more slowly, but if not, McNeil could definitely win the starting job)

This is fun. Can't wait for the season.

  • Everyone wants Wagner at corner- he is our best. Some of the other guys need to step and and contribute at the safety position. Sentimore is likely to beat out Walls at end and Mo Couch will be rotating at NT.

Sentimore will def get his playing time, but I believe you start walls because he's bigger for stopping the run.

  • I really don't think couch is big enough to play the NT on anything but passing downs. So that's why I believe McCullers will be our run stopper and in passing situations they will rotate him off....

  • Love this discussion and it will be interesting to see how some of the position battles play out but the best thing is we have some options whereas the last couple of years it was put this one person here and hope for the best. Competition makes everyone better!

I agree with this to a T. Randolph will start no question. Brewer is a question mark, and Lanier could be beaten out, but I like his size.

  • Very nicely done Blaize. I think you should start a business of making Tennessee Football cards. I'd buy a set or two for myself. +1 for great job.

  • May the good Lord help us if we have to start Teague at CB again. That poor young man is still crispy from getting toasted so many times last year(UGA immediately comes to mind).

I think he started every game last year- don't see that changing. He also suffer from safeties being out of place on several occasions.

Deion Bonner will start before Teague does. If we get a SS that can play Waggner will move to CB and it will be Waggner and Lanier. Teague is beyond slow, gives an 8-10 yard cushion, and is soft.
