My perception of Hart is that he

  • is very conservative and wants to be in control based upon his handling of the Pat Summit situation and measures he has taken with the athletic department. A conservative guy like that is going to look at an 8 year 50 million dollar deal to get a coach and try to find excuses to not do the deal. He is going to have to have a whole lot of support and convincing to do the deal. He doesn't want to hire a guy who would have more power than he would. I suspect some of Gruden's demands are control over endorsement deals, etc. that are AD responsibility. A guy like Hart would not want to give up any of that authority. Hart IMO is the kind of guy you would hire if you wanted more fiscal responsibility in the athletic department but he is not the kind of guy to take risks like spending $50 million over 8 years. Somebody else will have to tell him to do it. I don't see him hiring a guy like Stoops either who would also cost that kind of money. He is going to go for the safe hire where he maintains control. Probably not the prescription for getting UT football back on top.

  • Will have to disagree. Is he conservative? Yeah, if being conservative = outstanding work ethic, having high expectations of himself and his employees, desire for success etc. He came to AL after Saban was hired but has said hundreds of times that Saban was a value at his high salary.

Will Hart spend money he doesn't have or can't raise? No. Would he pay top money for a sure thing? Certainly.

This guy is well studied and thrives for the success of his department as well as his own success. If this means he's conservative I agree with you but don't agree he will not make the best hire possible given current circumstances.

  • It looks like we're either going to have Gruden - or Hart's head.

Nobody knows a thing about what is going on behind closed doors, and it is wrong to base opinions on pure speculation.

So let me get this straight - after years of financial mismanagement in the men's athletic department that has essentially left them broke, you are criticizing Hart because you think he won't be reckless with money?
