New WR Coach options

  • More than likely now that Tee has declined the position, Butch Jones will more than likely bring his WR coach from Cincy TJ Weist.

    Vols8

  • or a possibility of bringing back Hinshaw for his recruiting abilities.

    Vols8

  • I'll never doubt Hinshaw's recruiting abilities but from what we seen last year should be evident enough of his lack of coaching abilities. Take Patterson and Hunter for example: all the dropped balls and Patterson's route-running consistency. Yes Patterson was in the league for 1 year and it was all new to him; and Patterson was coming off of an injury. I get that; but having discipline to run a route properly does not take a full year to learn...and Hunter's injury was his knee...not his hands. I know there is not a possibility of this but I would love to see Hinshaw as a recruiter only, with us having a better WR coach...somebody who wouldn't care to get in that ARSE and get people really moving! The self-inflicted cockiness from that position (which they both showed doses of) needs to go.

    +1 UT Rudy.

I expect the NFL Draft to be awkward with Hunter and Patterson going high and playing well and we sit back and try to figure out why they were not as good at UT.

I disagree about the cockiness, I think you have to be at that position and it is a difficultt thing to internalize at 19-20.

So the other 13 players that had catches for UT this year other than Patterson and Hunter for almost 2000 yards didn't learn anything from Hinshaw? The receivers at UT had overall one of the best seasons in UT history. Just because the Defense was horrible you can't take that away from what the offense did.

  • I vote keep hinshaw over cbj old wr coach. I really really wanted Tee on this staff. He could bring our recruiting classes up big time with his abilities imo.

Also look at Hinshaw"s committments. A few are key right now.

See, I disagree. I think those are the two WR that you can't judge him on. When someone can't learn a few routes, as simply as you make his regimen (CP), you cannot put that on the coach. He has to keep up with the guys who are learning/already know the plays, and can't spend too much time with a single player, no matter how good he may be. As far as Hunter, I disagree again. As someone who has had a serious injury in college football and then tried to come back the next year, it is hard to get it out of your head and just play. Knowing it was a knee injury, he looked to be concentrating more on running cleanly and avoiding contact than catching, hence his "alligator arms". I look more at the next level of WR, such as Rogers and Carter. How much did they come on?? Carter came out of seemingly nowhere to contribute this year, and Rogers, who came in as just a burner with bad hands, turned into a fast possession receiver with good enough hands and a pretty decent route runner. Is that coaching? I think absolutely so.

Hinshaw is a better option than just about anyone out there. Keeping him also could minimize some of the recruiting turnover.

I agree with your angle on the cockiness; but it should be internalized more. At 19-20, its totally difficult; which is where the coach comes into play to eliminate it at least to a point to where an ego isn't showed publicly when they're still dropping multiple catchable balls. Pretty sure we're on the same page.

As a receiving corps, yes...its obvious to say they're some of the best we have ever had. I point out Patterson and Hunter due to the fact that they're the most publicized of our bunch. And you may not be this kind of person..idk..but its just my nature. No matter how good you are, there are always things to improve. The defense sucked...plain and simple. I totally give you those points. As for Hunter and Patterson and even Rogers (though I'd say was the MOST reliable of all of our receivers through this past season) at times, look at how good they were....then think back to Florida (sticks out to me the most) and Bama and other clutch moments where a big catch was possible. The ALL-OUT potential of those guys could have been even more than what it was given their skill sets. Nobody can take away from what they accomplished...no doubt about it; and they did accomplish alot; but nobody can tell me that their full potential was seen this season either. They learned from Hinshaw yes, but I feel that just their natural ability (which ALWAYS can improve) done most of what they accomplished under the previous coaching regime.

Learning routes are simple. Learning the offensive system and where to put those routes is not. The coach definitely has to keep up with other players and make sure they're progressing yes and I give you credit; though I think Carter and Rogers personally have great self-work ethics, coaching played into their progress. As for the other two, of course we can judge the coaches based on them. Who listed them as our starters? They sure played more than the guys who were progressing. Athletically yes, they were better than Rogers and Carter (though I'm SO proud of Carter and his story); but since they're the ones in the game...I would believe the coaches would be judged MOST on them two. If the psychological effects were that big of an issue for Hunter, he shouldn't have been in the game. I also believe that's where the coach needs to have a come to Jesus meeting with him about where his mind is/was. As for Patterson, the slouchy routes and then the 2 unsportsmanlike calls were strong indications of the coach...a direct reflection of them as a matter of fact.

As for positives though, they ended up being excellent players and are now possible high draft picks, and whether Hunter stays or goes, we all enjoyed watching them. As for Hinshaw, I'm sure they all learned from him. I just feel there were important "little things" that were missing that could have made them even more phenomenal.

  • I can agree/disagree with a lot of the posts. Here's why. Sure hinshaw has a lot to offer. Has been successful in some areas and not in others. That's a given with anyone. I think by researching TJW history both coaching and recruiting has been very consistent. Anytime you are recruiting for a MAC or Big East school, you are limited on getting the elite talent. All that said, what would TJW's recruiting/coaching stats look like at a major program where he has better access to elite talent consistently? Would he stand to be more successful " stat " wise at UT than Hinshaw? Just asking'.

And this my good sir is a valid point I have not considered. I have only seen what I have seen from UT's end. I know nothing on TJW except what I see here. Good question indeed.

  • Hindshaw did a great job with the receivers. You can't coach dropped passes. I don't think CP cared to learn route running. He didn't need to. Look at Rogers and Carter. They became great receivers when Hindshaw took over. He will have 3 receivers drafted next year. Not a bad deal
