News Sentinel against UT?

  • I've always lived around the Knoxville area so I'm not sure how things are elsewhere and was hoping others could shed some light on something for me. I'm sure it's been discussed before, but alot of times it seems like the News Sentinel has an agenda against the athletic department. For example, the article about the secondary violations. The headline always seems to make the situation sound so much worse then it is. I was of the understanding that pretty much every university has these secondary violations. Maybe I'm just too sensitive for my university....What do you guys think?

  • Im sure others who are local could answer the question about whether the paper is against the AD better than me.
However the headline did exactly what it is supposed to do....get you to read the article!!!
Every newspaper and website in the country does that....i would say even 247. Not sure on W/R/K thoughts on headlines but i would love to hear them as my dad still runs 6 newspapers in VA so I have a little more interest than most.

  • Evan Woodbery's article stated that the News-Sentinel submitted an Open Records Request for the nature of these secondary violations more than a month ago and UT has not complied with the request by the letter of the law (within 7 business days).

I can understand the athletic department being in CYA mode leading into National Signing Day, but attempting to keep these issues from the local press is not a good idea.

  • Some fans seem to confuse the roles of the university/athletic department PR offices and the newspaper.

  • Meh, I've never really noticed an agenda, though I might be naive. It's tough to write about good things when we are down as far as we are, but they definitely do. A general UT fan expects positive things from the Vols, just like with any other program that's had success, and the negative articles stand out more.
Think of it like if you eat at a restaurant 20 times and its been on par with expectations, but one of those times you find a hair in your food. You'll remember that 1 time over the 19 others

  • Open records requests are pretty standard in this business. I've made dozens of requests and will do dozens more. Just part of the job.

  • They do have an agenda. I know that for a fact. When I was interning there I worked two weeks on a project that was going to be the lead story for Sundays paper.

The day before my story ran UT upset Miami. My story got bumped to the bottom of the page and the upset victory was the lead.

    Bastards.

See they totally hate UT. Especially since when they win they sell more papers.

  • I simply like the fact that the University waited until after signing day to comply. I don't know all the facts, but it seems like if UT would have complied with the "7 business day" rule, this story would have broke just before signing day. Could you imagine the hysteria?panic Then people would really think KNS had an agenda, which they might, for requesting the records at the time that they did.

    Lol yes

Believe me, I was a lot happier with us winning that game than my story being the center.

I thi k it should also be part of their job to paint the University In more of a positive light just because of the things that it could do for the community and all of its people

    That's not a newspaper's job.

You don't know how many stories I wrote or edited in my career that were originally slotted for "lead slot, 1A" that ended up buried by breaking news. It's the nature of the business.

    +1 to ya RL!
