Non-vol question - camping

Since joining I have really enjoyed seeing everyone's opinions on different subjects. I was wanting to get sugeestions on campgrounds in Tennessee. We will bring two families with a total of 5 children. There ages from 3-8 years old. Just looking for a place to camp and have activities for kids and the adults. Thanks again.

Elkmont Campground in the Smokies. It's the closest park campground to Gatlinburg. Great hikes, gorgeous scenery. The only negative is no hot showers, but if you're there in the summer, you can jump in the Little River. Or if you have an RV, it's not a problem.

Tellico plains is a great area like Gatlinburg without all the tourist stuff! It's beautiful! Lots of fun things to do like fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking etc.. More laid back than the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area! I prefer that over the tourist areas.

If u wanna come all the way east, Roan Mountain State Park is a wonderful place.

When I was a kid, I remember going to Watts Bar for a weekend. At the time there was a lot to do from the viewpoint of a 6-year old, I'd assume there's even more now.

My family and I camp at Elkmont quite a bit. Pretty area, though some campsites are better/more private (and closer to the bathrooms!) than others.

I don't remember the name of the campground, but there was one in Pigeon Forge just before you enter the park between PF and Gatlinburg that I stayed at once. I remember there was a pool onsite, but unfortunately not much else.

Rock Island State Park, or Center Hill lake has a couple of great spots. Go during July and check out he fiddlers jamboree in Smithville. Great Lake, great sites, and some very nice people. It is about 2 hours back west of Knoxville off I40.
If you want to go a little bit more, Nathan Bedford Forrest just outside of Camden TN, has some great stuff to do and see and then you can go South to Shiloh Battlefield on a day trip, Parkers Crossroad on a day trip, move just up hwy 641 to Paris Landing State park. Great things on the lake, around the lake, and Paris TN is home to the worlds largest fish fry. If you have a boat this one is great as well.

Fall Creek Falls is the best park in the state. Especially when considering kids and family activities. I first went there when I was 10 and became hooked on camping for the rest of my life from that first outing at FCF.

Cades Cove/Townsend is always a nice area to camp but plan in advance.

Fall Creek Falls State Park is about 1 hour northwest of Chattanooga. Spectacular scenery, fishing, miles and miles of bike trails, golf and lot's of other activities.

Roan Mtn
Warriors Path
The following are great sites, but don't really have the facilities of a state park...
Cardens Bluff [on Watauga lake]
Dennis Cove [right off Appalachia trail in Hampton]
Anything in the Smokies
Little Wilbur [on lower side of Watauga lake and very popular]

I like Loyston Point in Big Ridge. Mostly for the awesome drive.
