First-year Tennessee defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri on Wednesday downplayed the schematic limitations on his defense and insisted not all that much has changed.

  • Like anything else, I wonder about our D coordinator and his ability to solve problems creatively.

I think the biggest problem is that clearly the coaches aren't getting through to the players. It's not schematics that are the problem, it's misalignment, poor effort, and terrible tackling. Defense isn't "locked in" and outside of the first few minutes against Bama it hasn't been all year.

I wonder if UT would have won a few more games if we still played a 4-3 defence? I know UT would have beat UGA if we played better D.

If we had stayed in a 4-3 D like last year, we would be having just as many issues. Georgia would have killed us had it not been for all the turnovers they committed that kept this team going. Those Wilcox defenses were not great at generating turnovers. Switching defensive philosophies was a necessary move. The allure of Tennessee has always been the ability to prepare players for the next level. The 3-4 is becoming the prevalent defense in the NFL and if the coaching staff remains and continues we will see greater improvement next year and future recruiting success as a result. Just my opinion.

If NOTHING has changed, it doesn't bode well for this weekend. I know what he is attempting to say, but I think it may be a literal statement.

I agree. It was a risky move but I think it was the best decision.

"not much has changed"...your right coach...it has looked the same every game this year. I hate going negative but it started in the NC State game. We were not running press coverage which can't be any worse than what we are doing. Limited blitzing so moderate to little pressure on the QB which puts more pressure on a marginally talented D backfield...continuing to send players out there who have shown no propensity to 'set the edge'...I'm jus' sayin'

On the last point of sending the same guys out there: does he have enough depth on the DL or at CB to send different guys out there? We've recruited enough on DL to field some talent there, but enough to bench starting DE's and go with talent that's not a big drop-off from there?

  • There is no reason we still don't know how to tackle, scheme change or not .

Saulsberry is a case in point of a guy who got a chance and made the most of it. Where is Stephen Fowlkes? Are there others who could make even a marginal difference? I don't know what side Saulsberry is playing but could he have prevented some of the runs that Georgia had?

  • Saulsberry played a good game against bama. He was getting off blocks well and finding the ball. You have Bonner & Grey at the corner position that are freshman. Coleman has started playing better but Waggoner has been ok but he still shys away from contact and that's not a good fit for our system. These corners have to be head hunters in a sense. Have to make plays on the edge.

I agree whole heartedly with both you and mikeltn. I would like to add that our defense caused a lot of those turnovers by GA by being where they should be and putting a hat on the ball. If we could play defense that way every week we would be much better. Anytime you can even up the turnover ratio you're a much better team and eventually the points against us would go down.
