Notes: Hunter exceeds expectations

Tennessee junior wide receiver Justin Hunter was expected to ease himself back into his normal workload Monday morning in his return to the practice field. So much for that.

  • I am HIGHLY disappointed that I cannot like this more than once! Hunter is the key to our offensive production!!

  • A lot if good info. Callahan doing work.

  • While I have had a positive felling about this team for the last two years... this year is different. It really looks like we are finally back in a position were we have experience and depth.

  • Hunter is back baby!!!

  • Seems like there is a lot of positive energy and attitude! I like it!

  • Wes had an interesting tweet, saying he thought this was the first team Dooley had that passed the eyeball test.

  • Is it too early to crack a beer and re-read this? Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!

If Hunter is still the key to our offensive production then that's very scary....We saw what happened when he wasn't on the field last season. Hopefully, this team will be in a position this season where if a guy like Hunter goes down other guys can step right in and perform. You never want to have to build your whole game plan around one receiver like Dooley had to last season. If that's the case again this year then we are in trouble. We need the offensive line to step up and at least two running backs to step up.

I'm glad Hunter is feeling good, but I really hope they take their time with him. As a Panther's fan, I watched Thomas Davis come back "ahead of schedule" and tear his ACL again. Just be patient, he doesn't need to earn his spot in spring ball.

Your first statement is exactly why Hunter being back is a good sign! Teams realistically only had to over half the field because we had no big play capability out of anyone other than Da'Rick. With Hunter back, and Patterson in the mix, and CHH out the door, we should be an all around better team. I hope Bray learns he to operate under center this spring and gets his lazy footwork in check. We have to run better than last year, and nt being in shotgun 90% of the time would be a great start.

No offense but it feels good to get an article about something other than recruiting when it's 11 months from signing day. I appreciate the info you guys bring but this was like a cool breeze. Thanks, great job +1.

  • I'm actually most concerned about the secondary. I guess the areas mentioned in the article (lineplay, running backs, WRs and LBS) are going to pan out nicely, barring significant injuries.

  • The key to this season will be:

    1. Whether the offensive line can run block well enough to give us (at least) a decent running game - if it does it will take the pressure of bray and let the offense stretch the field with hunter/Rogers/Patterson. To do that though, the run game will have to get us to 2nd/3rd and short instead of the 3rd and longs we saw all last season; and

    2. Whether the secondary can cover the deep ball. The switch to the 3-4 means that we should have no problem covering intermediate drop zones up to 15 yards. However, we lacked a bit of raw speed last year in the secondary and it showed when we played against elite receivers. Hopefully the new new kids bring some much needed speed for deep coverage in 3rd and long nickel defense schemes.

It will be interesting to see how the season unfolds because it seems like we finally have all the tools to succeed against sec competition. Coach em up Dooley and go Vols!

While I mostly agree with this statement I think that this season will almost certainly depend on how the players and new coaches get along. If there's a real sense of camaraderie then the players can learn and grow in the new system. If it doesn't gel immediately the learning curve may cut us off at the knees. It's one thing to have almost all new players on a team trying to adapt to time honored tradition, it's another thing altogether to have players used to working within a system suddenly under fire in a whole new world under new mentors they didn't expect when they signed their LOI.

Looking at the resumes' of these coaches gives me a lot of hope, but you know what they say about the best intentions. We've got a real chance to make something special happen here if everyone buys in and puts their learning caps on.
