Notes: McCullers still improving

Nose tackle Daniel McCullers was able to play his way into UT’s starting lineup by the second week of preseason camp, and he’s still impressing the Vols' coaching staff.

  • Back to back stories this morning on the Big Guys anchoring the lines . . . great articles! You guys are making it much harder to focus on work for the next couple of days without constantly thinking about Friday night or living on this board!

Seems very odd the GA Dome won't allow a walk-through. What's up with that?

  • Don't think Hunter will miss a step, Patterson may blow a few routes.. Zach may get the chance to make some big catches, especially in a 3 WR set..This Amerson guy scares me, he's got that same intangible quality that Eric Berry has..He's probably going to be shadowing Hunter but that will leave opportunities for big plays from TE and also Rajon..It's up to Chaney to call the right plays and he better not blow this one cause he's had months to watch film on State's defense

  • I dont think people give Rodgers his credit with 4.4 speed, this guy is in no way slow, he just knows the short to intermwdiate routes better than the other guys, probably why you don't ever see him run deep.

Everytime I see a highlight of Amerson he has safety help on the picks, heard Ainge say that NCST leaves him on the wide side of the field, we don't have to beat this guy....kinda like you don't have to be faster than a bear that's chasing you, just faster than your buddy lol

If C J Wilson (CB) is unable to play Fri., we may just have gotten a break. Although State has excellent Safeties IMO they're zone type safeties NOT cover type safeties. And with the possible loss of Amerson, we may be looking at a few "over the top" big plays. However Bray must lead the receivers and not "under throw" or their safeties can recover nicely and "make plays".. In other words "bombs away" possibly for Hunter, CP, Young and Blanc (although Z Rogers does have deceptive speed).

By the way, I know this article started on McCullers. I can't wait to see if this "big man" can truly be disruptive along with Hood coming in and making plays after McCullers "wears em down". Also got a feelin Couch and Sentimore are gonna make some plays.

If I'm not mistaken Z. Rogers won or was second in the 100meter state championship.

  • i'm assuming the reason for using darr and palardy on punts is because of inconsistancies right?

I've seen several highlights of him as well, and I agree, usually not on an island in coverage. The guy is still probably the best corner they'll play this season, but he isn't what I'd call a "shut down" corner. I tallied the leading receivers for their opponents( not including FCS or GT cause GT only attempted 12 passes) last year to mention it on my show, and each teams leading receiver averaged 77.7 yards a game, but if I remember correctly there were 3 100 yd games in there. That's not to say that was on him as he may have very well been locking someone down(I don't think Sammy Watkins played against them, but Andre Ellington only had 12 yards receiving for Clemson). I really don't know because I didn't watch a whole lot of NC State football last year. Not sure that eases anyone's mind, but I figured I'd toss it out there for some discussion. Mychal Rivera and Raijon Neal are the guys I see having huge nights. Rivera will be a nightmare to match up against, and if Neal can catch some passes in space and get into the open field, then game over.

  • You know the old saying, if you have 2 punters, you don't have a punter. Looks like we need to go out and recruit a new punter. Oh wait, we did and he's hurt right?
