Notes: Vols look to 'regroup'

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley says his team has "got to regroup" following its 44-13 loss to No. 1 Alabama on Saturday night with yet another tough game awaiting next week.

  • The "trio" going pro?
Bray completes 51% and can't win an Sec game.
Hunter is the prototypical NFL WR. Lots of dropped balls won' help his cause.
Cordurele (sp?) is a huge talent. Hope he stays but he's almost an Eric Berry caliber player.
Bray's a train wreck. NFL wants more than an arm. I wouldn't miss him anyway.

  • I wonder if NFL team would draft anyone of the 3 just on potential? I know it happens, but they ALL need to pack more football knowledge into their heads. I'm seriously torn on whether I want them to stay and hope it clicks by SEC gametime next year, or see what Worley and the rest of the team has got to offer. Let alone whether or not I want Dooley back or not. Lots and LOTS of ?????

  • I think Vols need to go with Worley. He should have a better connection with Patterson. Bray has been to in-consistent this year. He really has slim hopes for the NFL, maybe the arena league.

  • It's pretty obvious that Bray is not spending the time in the film room learning to read the opposing team's defense each week it's the same thing all over again . Bray has NFL arm strength and accuracy but he lacks an NFL work ethic . Give Worley more reps in practice and start getting him ready maybe Bray will get the hint .

  • I know people are upset with the way things are going, but there's no way you bench tyler bray. this team still has things to play for. I'm not saying that Worley isnt a good player, but there is no way you bench tyler bray. Keep in mind that these past few games are Bray's first against real competition. He definitely needs to return for his senior season, and he needs to figure some things out....but you cannot bench him. thats basically packing the season in.

  • I'm so tired of "regrouping" every week.

    And every year.

  • me too, this is getting out of hand. when a coach does not know why his qb can not perform, that is a problem. im not a dooley hator, but at this point i see horrible coaching decisions being made which should not being made in year3 of rebuilding. maybe its Chaney, i have a hunch he contributes to it. dooley at this point needs to win a significant game against an sec team. there is not many left, maybe SC. at this point, this is what i observe:

    1. tyler bray cannot read defense or he is staring down receivers.
    2. the defense is not in the correct formation or fails to make adjustments correctly and gets beat on nearly every play, although in the first half against bama they wernt that bad.
    3. coaching decisions which we should have learned about two years ago are horrible. (i.e. when u have two timeouts with 1:08 clock, you dont let 40 seconds run off before calling timeout. especially when u have a recieving corps and gunslinger against a number 1 team.
    4. we dont stick to one thing or give running the ball a chance. of course u want to mix it up. but we will run the ball for one or two plays and we right back to passing again. then our qb trys to run some ugly pitiful playaction fake. we are faking no one out. i have a feeling this is horrible play calling by chaney.
    5. hunter looks like he is favoring his acl. i have had a broken acl and an acl takes years to fully heal. i see why he favors it. people who think he is waiting for nfl are crazy.

  • I read on one of the boards that one of the NFL evaluaters of NFL talent was asked about the NFL for Bray, Hunter and Patterson. His answer being all would go in the money but all three would help themselves financially with another year in college.

  • Are you kidding. Remember last season when Bray was out with the broken finger and came back before completed healed and was superior to Worley. IMO Peterson is the better QB prospect we have behind Bray and had pulled even with Worley as backup to Bray prior to being injured and is now taking a RS. Peterson Has some running ability plus a good arm according to observers this spring. Bray has the potential to be an NFL Star QB. His actions and demeanor reminds me of the patriots long time QB
    Brady.

  • Good report, Ryan. Saulsberry had a solid game, and gained some great experience out there. Nice to see Sentimore make a couple big plays as well. The defensive front looks better every week. The secondary still seems to be strugglin' in the new scheme, but they're all learning from mistakes each week.

  • I agree with most of the preceding comments. Bray's got a great arm but is not showing in games that he can read SEC defenses. Not enough film room? Not picking up what he needs to? ??

That's an interesting comment about the time needed to recover from an ACL injury. I didn't know that and have never heard it. I do know that after Jamal Lewis blew his ACL ('96? '97?) he wasn't quite the same when coming back the following year. I wonder what effect that had on Lane last year, and what his upside is going forward?

Given that Bray, Hunter nor Patterson has made enough big plays in big games this year, it seems in their best interest to come back for their Sr seasons. Maybe one or more of them would have anyway. All 3 of those guys have proven they've got talent -- but which of them has proven in big SEC games they can bring enough of it to the field?

  • Patterson is gone. Noway he comes back for a Senior season if he keeps it up. I would have said at the start of the season that Bray and Hunter were 100% gone to the NFL too, but now it is very apparent that TB needs another year of college ball....... a NFL defense would eat him alive. If Hunter stays projected as the #1 WR prospect (even with all the drops) he will go pro as well.

I have already mentally moved on to "next year" sadly.........I think Peterman is out future at the QB position.
