When Tennessee opens its first spring practice under new coach Butch Jones’ staff Saturday morning, a few players will be lining up at new positions.

  • Brewer to LB is a good move. He's way too slow to be a safety.

    Good stuff on JJames

A lot of interesting stuff cocnerning the off-season S&C.

I agree. Fast enough to be a backer though. He is a hitter too!

Totally agree, he's a big hitter and a run stopper and his speed is much more suited to cover TE's or flare passes to the RB's.

  • Do you know if they are going to post pics of tomorrow's practice(s)?

I hope Jacques can have a break out season this year.

Ditto! We definitely need him to play up to the hype he had coming out of h.s.

It's about time Brewer got moved to OLB. I think he will really succeed there, could have a breakout year IMO. He showed flashes the first couple years he was here; just think he was out of place at safety. Vereen's move kinda surprises me considering how thin we are at LB, but I trust the coaches on that one.

Just a feeling, but I think Maggitt is gonna be hell on wheels at the LEO DE position. Great athleticism and speed, natural pass-rusher. He's going to blow up once he gets healthy. Smith going back to DE is a good move too; he's waaaay to big to be a 4-3 LB.

Overall, solid decisions by the staff IMO. Personally, I would've kept Vereen at LB but again, I'll trust the coaches there. Young will shine in the slot I think. Can't wait for practice to begin.

Totally agree with your assessment ,especially about Devrin.I made a similar post in another thread today about his move to slot and was down voted.I always envisioned him filling a role similar to Trindon Holiday did at LSU a few years back.

Good comparison, although I don't think Young has Holliday's top end speed.

  • Will Brewer need to put on any weight or is he big enough? I can't remember what his weight is.

Pretty sure Brewer has had a hard time keeping his weight down, so he should be able to play at his natural body type.

Both Brewer and Maggitt have had injury problems and more contact for Brewer may be a risk. Here's hoping UT can avoid the injury bug this year and keep what talent we do have on the field..GBO!!

  • Thought Maggitt had "turf toe". Somehow I missed the ACL tear and surgery. That's not an easy thing to bounce back from. Lotta guys say it takes more than a year to really have the knee back. I really hope Curt can defy that law of averages and come back strong in the fall. We need him in a BIG way. Vols!!
