***OFFICIAL Summer Olympics 2012 (MIGHT BE SPOILERS)***

  • I'm most excited about the showdown between Mary Poppins and Lord Voldemort in the opening ceremonies!

I'll take Mary Poppins. Just a spoon full of sugar....crackwhip

    UTK, Class of 2009

    The Internet

  • My first son was born just before last winter Olympics. Gave me something to watch during late night feedings. They will show something on the extra channels at all times of night. Watched a lot of curling that year. Oh and the biathlon which was cross country skiing and target shooting.

    Myrtlevol

  • is NBC really NOT showing the Opening Ceremony LIVE so they can keep the Ellen DeGeneres and Dr. Phil's shows on???

Or are they showing it live on another one of their channels?

GO VOLS! GO HEAT! GO PHINS! GO BRAVES! And for those who know soccer: GO BRAZIL! GO GRÊMIO!

Brazil has never won gold in summer olympics. They are loaded this summer and should win. Neymar, Hulk, Oscar, Silva.

Some may not know, I'm Brazilian, and there is NO WAY we win gold...our coach sucks (he was an awesome coach for my club a few years back but sucks at the realm of the national team)....Neymar is one cocky SOB that does not play team ball...

No offense, but this really shows you arent a sports guy. You have to love the Olympics for the pure dedication to sport. It is everything that is right in the world. These athletes dedicate their lives for one chance to compete against the best in the world and it is on TV. Whether you watch out of pure patriotism for the USA or not, how can you not watch the best in the world? We arent talking your NBA "world" champions, or your "world" series champions in baseball. We are watching the true WORLD champions.

I totally disagree. I think the Olympics is sports for folks that aren't sports fans.

My wife doesn't want sports at all for 4 years, excepts she'll watch gymnastics at the Olympics. My grandmother doesn't watch sports, but she'll watch Olympic figure skating.

It's why the ratings and page views, etc., are so high - because people that don't care about sports watch the Olympics.

They're airing it during prime time to get the most viewers. They did the same thing with the Beijing Games in 2008...

Great...gotta stay away from Twitter then for the next 3 hours...WTF!

I'd be OK with them doing that as long as it was showing it live on the other NBC networks...

I don't want to choose between being a sports person or an Olympics person.

I think the draw to the Olympics for non-sports people, however, is patriotism and competition and the amazing stories (indivudal athletes overcoming odds, underdog countries, etc) that come from it.

And the opening ceremony is amazing!

  • No spoilers, but the Opening Ceremony was spectacular. Watch it if you can. I'm actually feeling a little bit patriotic right now!

  • Well, there are some sweeping generalizations in this thread. I'm a "sports person," and I love the Olympics. But then, I'm not your typical sports person in that I hate the NBA, and couldn't care less about the NHL, though I love watching the American hockey team. Conversely, I don't like the fact pro basketball players get to play in the Olympics. if you are going to let them in, why not pro boxers?

I don't care much about league soccer, but Olympic soccer is very cool.

I love a lot of minor sports I wouldn't know much about were it not for the Olympics, things like curling, archery and even beach volleyball. I never watched it before 1996 and now I love it.

The Olympics is the greatest sporting event in the world. I'm happy to have helped cover one and hosting one was the biggest event ever in the city I've lived for most of my life. The Olympics rule!

I've been trying to figure this out. But I don't know what they're holding or what to call it so I don't know how to ask anyone or google the answer...

On the bright side, the 2016 games are in Rio De Janeiro, so at worst they will be one hour off eastern time...

Those were parts of the Olympic Cauldron. Basically instead of one giant "bowl" for the flame, they had one smaller bowl for each nation that combined to form the cauldron. Those bowls were attached to one of the pipes used to create the cauldron. It was pretty impressive to see it being lit, so I'd recommend catching it on YouTube when you have a chance...

  • Why is it that Jacques Rogge's (IOC President) french accent gets worse with each Olympics? I could understand him fine in 1996, but I can barely understand half of what he says tonight...

  • What I learned from the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics:

    5. I can now FINALLY cross "watch Queen Elizabeth skydive into the Olympic Stadium with James Bond" off my bucket list.

    4. What was up with the Canadian athletes' uniforms? Did they really need to wear the name of the country across their chests like it was 1980?

    3. Speaking of uniforms, did the German team steal theirs from Babies R' Us? Baby blue and pastel pink work for Easter Sunday, not the Olympics!!

    2. J.K. Rowling reading from Peter Pan with dementors running around the place was a little odd.

And the most important thing I learned from watching the Opening Ceremonies:

    1. Who needs Harry Potter to defeat Lord Voldemort when you have 100 Mary Poppins on hand?

  • So I'm up at 6am watching the road race (cycling). Are these guys really pulling over to the side and using the bathroom? Didn't realize that was legal in cycling lol
