  • Now that gruden is out who would yalls next 2 canidates be and why? Excluding stoops and fisher they are very long shots at most. I am curious to see what coaches would have fans on the same page. For me it would be strong and either golden or davis next

    mcharris87

  • Top choice not counting Fisher and Stoops would be Fedora and second would be Davis. I've been reading up on Fedora alot with all the articles posted on here and have really bought into him.

    ron4volserrrday

  • In this order I hire Jimbo Fisher, Larry Fedora, Charlie Strong, Mike Gundy, Al Golden. That is how I would work down the list from here. GO VOLS

  • Greg Roman then Charlie Strong

  • If Gundy is an option, mine are Gundy, Fisher, Fedora, Strong....If we have to go beyond that close up shop...We're toast

  • I just cannot fathom why UT would hire Golden. He doesn't have a lifetime winning record, barely did well at Temple in the patsy Big East, and now struggles to put together a winning season with one of the most recognized teams in America? He can stay in Miami for all I care. I want no part in him being my coach. Plus the shirt and tie on the sidelines looks weird.

I, like most, put Fisher and Stoops at the top of my list. I'd really like Hart to pursue Gundy at Okie State. Fedora and Davis are right below Fisher and Stoops.

  • Hire Butch Davis and let's go. Stoops and Fisher are not coming. Davis is the best of the realistic options IMHO.

Take a look at Temple before he was there. Again, we're talking about Temple.

And as far as Miami goes, yes, they have been a big time program, but not at this particular time. They almost received the death penalty. Considering the circumstances, I'd venture to say that he has done an exceptional job at Miami. And, Miami's rebuilding project is much worse than ours. Golden has handled it pretty well so far.
Regardless, he's still not in my top 3.

  • Temple was not in the Big East when he started or when he left, but They were invited back because of his success. They were originally kicked out of the BE in 2005. The program was awful. 30-137 from 1991-2005. 69-110-3 from 1970-1990 Temple football was really bad for 30 years then Golden came and they went 27-34 but that was with a 1-11 season in 2006. If you take it out then Golden is 26-23 at a really bad football school. I have golden at 5 on my list. not to high but he would be a nice falling place if we cant get what we go after first. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tem/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/mg_history_06.pdf

Since the only mantra you have is "Hire Butch Davis", obviously you have no concerns about his involvement in UNC's NCAA issues?

  • Strong and Fedora. Young Coaches with strong recruiting ties. Both respected, personable and intense. Both are coveted by Jeremy Foley, which is an indictment of their abilities.

    Agent Orange

  • Strong - Monster recruiter, teams play hard, experienced in the SEC, and a winner.
Roman - I believe in the Harbaugh coaching tree, did things right at Stanford, NFL experience will play well in recruiting.

    Ugh hires
Golden - He is basically doing what Randy Shannon did at UM, not impressive to me given the natural advantage of Miami.
Davis - His record reads like Calipari, UT can't handle that while on probation.

  • So it seems like most of u like strong or fedora I guess I need to look more into fedora cause everyone seems to like him but me

Not really -- word is NCAA will clear him of any wrongdoing.

  • 1)Fisher- I don't really think he is that long of a shot.
2)Fedora-the more I read about him the more he sticks out.
3)Strong-just a name most kids know and recruits well.
4)Mora Jr- I think he will recruit well and look at what he's done at ucla in year 1.
5)Petrino- if we get this far down the list who cares about his moral character at this point.

I generally don't disagree with you, but was Miami hit with major violations during Davis's tenure? Did they have to vacate any games?

  • 1. Davis
    2. Strong
    3. Fisher

I don't think the timing is right with Fedora. He went 8-4 with Davis's recruits, which weren't half bad. Let's see what he can do with his own people. If we have to do it, so be it, but hopefully he falls somewhere below Davis, Strong, and Fisher. I would probably take Fedora before Golden.

  • Miami has had its fair share of problems, but the job that Davis did cleaning up that situation was pretty remarkable. Dennis Erickson had left that program on life support.

Even with the Shapario stuff floating out there, Davis was in the NFL when all of that went on. I believe that his involvement started under Coker.

The guy can flat out coach and would be recieving a healther program that what he got at Miami and North Carolina.

Agreed. If UT gets Davis and keeps all the rising Seniors on D, UT will go atleast 4-4 in the SEC and win 8 regular season games year 1. Last year was a complete and utter misuse of talent on the defensive side of the ball. If he can keep them all, he will put them in a position to succeed. He'll also have two legit safeties and some speed at corner and Davis will get the young talent at corner ready to play. I believe the recruiting class will also be top 15. He will not get big boyed by Saban, Miles, or anybody else.

  • I would have loved Gruden but I think we need to recognize that we're going from Dooley to someone much better whoever is hired (it can't possibly be worse). And it should be a great Coach because we're not in a panic situation after getting Kiffin'ed. I'm hoping for any of these guys:

Charlie Strong - did great work at Florida as DC and has turned around Louisville after Petrino screwed them (remember Steve Kragthorpe was awful there for 3 years after Petrino left). And the dude is a great recruiter.

Jimbo Fisher- I don't think he'll leave FSU but he has skills and is one heck of a recruiter. He did good things at LSU (as OC) and would bring a good staff. Can't go wrong with Jimbo.

Butch Davis - great coach and was doing a terrific job at NC... even when the agent party trips stuff came out most fans wanted to keep him. I do worry about his compliance, but believe he'd recruit well and produce.

Larry Fedora - look at what he did at Southern Miss and he's doing good things at NC.

Dave Doeren- good work as Wisconsin's DC and has N Illinois lined up for a BCS bowl - up and coming (I'd prefer a young coach who could be here for 20 years potentially).

    I dislike but would support:

Al Golden- he did a great job at Temple and Miami folks love him, but I'm not sold that he's "the man". But he would be a huge improvement over Dooless.

Kirby Smart- great DC and no worries about the Bama connection as Saban wouldn't give any coach his defense unless he believed in him. But, if/when Richt leaves Georgia, Smart would be a very likely candidate... I'd hate to see us have another left in the middle of the night situation.

I'll support whoever is hired (well, except Petrino... I'm friends with a guy in the Atlanta Falcons organization...he was in the meeting where Petrino told owner Arthur Blank he was staying (he quit the next day).

Tennessee football is known for its awesome fan support and we need to rally around the new hire and get the right players coming to UT again! Go Vols!

  • All the options are good. There isn't a single stinker in the bunch.

For me personally I'd like Fedora or Doeren. Patterson is maybe my favorite college coach but I'd be scared to death Texas would steal him when they kick Mack to the curb.

    JPSke

  • I agree- Patterson is solid but not sure he'd leave TCU (he's has opportunities) and Texas does want him when Mack leaves.
